Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Titan

“Chief Hart—” Preston stammered, his posture instantly collapsing from a swaggering tycoon into a cornered animal. He tried to force a trembling, diplomatic smile, his hands fluttering nervously near his lapels. “I—I wasn't aware... we didn't expect visitors tonight. Emily must have misunderstood the hour.”
Thomas Hart did not blink. His eyes, the exact same shade of stormy blue as mine, swept past Preston into the grand foyer, taking in the shattered crystal, the blood on the marble floor, the torn white dress, and me lying broken against the wall.
When Thomas’s gaze returned to Preston, the temperature in the room dropped below freezing.
“Step away from my daughter,” Thomas said. His voice was low, devoid of shouting, yet it carried the terrifying weight of a thunderclap.
Preston swallowed hard, trying to regain his footing through sheer economic intimidation. “Now wait just a minute, Chief. You might wear a badge, but this is private property in La Jolla. I employ judges, councilmen, and district attorneys. You can’t just—ah!”
Before Preston could finish, Thomas stepped forward with blinding speed. He didn't punch him; instead, with the practiced precision of a veteran lawman, he grabbed Preston by his expensive silk lapels, hoisted him off his feet, and slammed him against the exterior stone wall with a dull thud.
Behind Thomas, four armed state troopers stepped into the foyer, their hands resting calmly on their holstered sidearms.
“You arrogant, miserable coward,” Thomas whispered, his face inches from Preston’s terrified eyes. “For five years, my daughter protected you because she thought marriage meant mercy. You mistook her grace for weakness. You mistook her silence for surrender. And tonight, inside your little glass cage, you crossed a line from which there is no return.”
Preston’s knees buckled. The billionaire logistics magnate—the man who controlled shipping lanes and billion-dollar contracts—slid down the stone wall until he was kneeling on the very marble floor where he had just assaulted me.

“Please,” Preston choked out, staring up at the four gold stars on Thomas’s shoulders in dawning, horrified comprehension. “I didn't... I didn't know who her father—you’re Hart. Thomas Hart. The State Director of Public Safety...”
“The very same,” Thomas replied coldly. He released Preston’s collar as if touching him were a disease.
