Chapter 8 - The Shadow Of Revenge

The peace of the autumn afternoon shattered without warning.
As the community garden began to wind down and the remaining volunteers packed up their tools, a battered, dark-tinted Dodge Charger turned aggressively onto the gravel driveway of the lot, its engine roaring with reckless speed.
Anna’s instincts flared instantly. "Leo! Come here right now!"
Leo looked up from the garden bed, startled by the panic in his mother’s voice.
The driver’s side door of the Charger kicked open. Marcus Carter—Sophia’s older brother, who had been indicted forty-eight hours earlier in the federal smuggling probe—stumbled out into the gravel. He was wild-eyed, reeking of alcohol, holding a heavy snub-nosed revolver in his shaking right hand.
"Where is she?" Marcus screamed, waving the weapon erratically toward the garden pavilion. "Anna Bennett! You ruined my family! My father had a stroke this morning in the holding cell! Sophia is in county lockup! You think you can destroy us and just plant f***ing flowers?"
Two female volunteers shrieked, ducking behind the wooden tool shed.
Leo froze in the center of the open dirt path, terrified, dropping his plastic trowel. "Mommy?"
Marcus spun toward the sound of the child’s voice, the barrel of the revolver tracking directly toward the three-year-old boy. "Is that your kid, Anna? Huh? Is that Moretti's little bastard? Let's see how much you like burying your family!"
"NO!" Anna screamed, lunging forward, but she was thirty yards away on the opposite side of the perimeter fence.
In that fraction of a second, the universe seemed to slow to an agonizing crawl.
There was no hesitation. No calculation. No pause to consider safety, survival, or second chances.
Vincent moved with the speed of an unleashed predator. He launched himself across the raised garden beds, his heavy boots kicking through the fresh soil, crossing the fifteen-yard gap between himself and his son in three desperate, explosive strides.
Crack!
The deafening report of the gunshot tore through the quiet neighborhood.
Vincent didn't flinch. He threw his entire massive body over Leo, slamming the boy into the soft, excavated soil of the planter box, encasing the child completely beneath his chest and broad shoulders like an impenetrable vault of flesh and bone.
Crack!
A second bullet tore through the air, ripping through the dense muscle beneath Vincent’s left shoulder blade. Vincent grunted, a sharp gasp of air tearing from his lungs, but he did not move an inch. He clamped his arms tighter around Leo, his head bowed low over his son’s neck, taking the full impact of the violence to ensure not a single splinter of lead could reach the child.
"I’ve got you, Leo," Vincent whispered through gritted teeth, blood immediately pooling in his mouth. "Daddy’s got you. You're safe. I promise... I promise I won't let go."
Marcus raised the gun for a third shot, his finger curling around the trigger—
BAM!
A single, precise rifle shot cracked from the perimeter. Marcus Carter dropped the revolver, clutching his shattered shoulder with a howl of agony as two plainclothes DPS tactical officers—part of the federal surveillance team that had been tracking Marcus since his indictment—tackled him violently into the gravel, pinning him to the ground in steel handcuffs.
"Clear! Shooter down!"
Anna ran. She cleared the perimeter fence, her boots tearing through the mud, screaming her son’s name until her lungs burned.
She reached the garden bed and dropped to her knees.
Vincent was still arched over Leo, his body rigid, refusing to unlock his protective embrace until he was certain the danger had passed. Dark crimson blood was already soaking through the back of his gray thermal shirt, dripping into the black soil beneath him.
"Vincent! Vincent, let me see him!" Anna sobbed, her hands frantically grasping his shoulders.
Vincent slowly, agonizingly rolled onto his side, his face pale as chalk, his breathing shallow and rattling.
Uninjured, completely shielded from the gunfire, Leo scrambled out from beneath him, covered in dirt, his eyes wide with shock. "Mommy! Vincent is bleeding! He fell down!"
Anna snatched Leo into her arms, checking every inch of his small body with frantic, trembling hands. Not a scratch. Not a drop of blood on the child.
She turned back to Vincent, who had collapsed onto his back in the soil, clutching his chest as dark blood seeped between his fingers.
"Hold on! Somebody call an ambulance!" Anna screamed, tearing her wool scarf from her neck and pressing it violently against the bullet wound in his shoulder. "Vincent, look at me! Keep your eyes on me!"
Vincent looked up. Despite the excruciating pain tearing through his torso, despite the cold darkness creeping along the edges of his vision, a faint, peaceful smile touched his bloody lips.
"I stayed," Vincent whispered, his trembling, mud-caked hand reaching up to lightly brush the tears from her cheek. "I didn't... I didn't run this time, Anna. He’s safe."
"You idiot," Anna wept, pressing down harder on the wound, her tears falling onto his pale forehead like rain. "You stubborn, reckless idiot. Don't you dare close your eyes! You hear me, Vincent Moretti? You spent three years making me grieve you! You do not get to die on me now!"

Vincent’s hand slipped from her cheek, his eyes fluttering shut as the sirens began to wail in the distance, his voice fading into a barely audible breath.
"I kept... the promise..."
