Chapter 24 - The Unmasking of the Boardroom

The morning sun broke through the autumn clouds over LaSalle Street, casting long golden rectangles across the sixty-foot marble table of the Moretti-Bennett boardroom.

At eight o'clock, the emergency board meeting was called to order.

The twenty regional directors and outside investors sat in tense, nervous silence. Rumors had been racing through the financial district for six hours: a raid on the South Side, federal interdictions at the Port of Newark, and an emergency trading halt on Great Lakes maritime bonds.

Sitting at the foot of the table was Harrison Cross—the nephew of the disgraced private equity raider Leonard Cross, who had retained a four percent preferred voting bloc. Harrison wore an expensive double-breasted suit, trying to project casual confidence, though his foot tapped an anxious, irregular beat beneath the mahogany skirt of the table.

The heavy double doors swung open.

Vincent and Anna walked in together.

Vincent was dressed in a tailored navy three-piece suit, his posture straight, his chin clean-shaven, bearing no visible trace of the brutal hand-to-hand combat he had fought four hours earlier along the Calumet River. Beside him, Anna wore an ivory silk wrap dress and her signature diamond serpent choker, carrying a slim leather folder stamped with the seal of the United States District Court.

Anna took her seat at the head of the table. Vincent stood beside her, leaning his knuckles against the edge of the marble, his piercing hazel eyes sweeping the room until they locked directly onto Harrison Cross.

"Good morning, gentlemen," Anna began, her voice cool and commanding. "Before we discuss our third-quarter dividend disbursements, there is a minor administrative matter regarding an illegal short-position taken against our maritime stock on the Cyprus International Exchange."

Harrison Cross shifted in his chair, clearing his throat. "Mrs. Moretti, market fluctuations on foreign exchanges are hardly the purview of an executive board—"

"They are when the entity executing the short position is Helios Maritime Holdings," Anna interrupted smoothly, opening her folder. "A shell corporation registered in Limassol, funded through a correspondent bank account belonging to Cross-Harbor Capital."

Harrison froze. The blood drained from his face so fast he looked as though he were about to vomit.

"And it becomes a corporate governance matter," Vincent added, stepping around the table until he stopped directly behind Harrison’s leather chair, "when the encrypted satellite codes used by Damian Cole to attempt the sabotage of the Crest of Michigan last night were extracted from a secure corporate server in this very building."

Vincent reached into his breast pocket, pulled out the flash drive recovered from the Calumet silo, and dropped it onto Harrison’s leather notebook with a sharp, echoing clack.

"Your personal IP login, Harrison," Vincent murmured, his voice dropping into that chilling, quiet register that made the entire room hold its breath. "Timestamped at eleven-forty-five on Friday night. You downloaded the vessel navigation schematics and handed them to Cole’s courier at a steakhouse in Oak Brook."

Harrison scrambled to his feet, knocking his crystal water glass over. Water spilled across the pristine leather blotter, dripping onto his trousers.

"This is an ambush!" Harrison shouted, his voice cracking with hysteria as he looked to the other board members for support. "You can't prove that! My uncle’s trust had legitimate hedging strategies—"

"Your uncle’s trust is currently being seized by the Department of Justice under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, Mr. Cross," Arthur Pendelton stated from the end of the table, holding up a certified federal indictment. "Damian Cole entered a full, recorded confession thirty minutes ago in federal custody. He named you as the co-conspirator who financed his forged passport, his weapons, and his satellite transponders."

The double doors clicked open once more.

Two armed federal marshals stepped into the boardroom, flanked by FBI Special Agent Reynolds.

"Harrison Cross," Agent Reynolds announced, displaying his gold badge. "You are under arrest for Conspiracy to Commit Maritime Sabotage, Wire Fraud, and Treason against Interstate Commerce."

Harrison’s knees gave out. The marshals seized him by the arms, dragging him toward the door as his heels scraped against the carpet, his panicked stammering fading down the executive hallway until the heavy fire doors clicked shut.

Anna closed her folder with a quiet, decisive snap. She looked down the table at the remaining eighteen directors, whose faces were pale with absolute, unyielding respect.

"Let this be the final reminder to every member of this table," Anna said, her voice ringing out like a cathedral bell in the silent room. "The house of Moretti-Bennett does not gamble with its integrity. We do not tolerate treason within our ranks. And anyone who mistakes our grace for weakness will find themselves answering to federal law and our sovereign resolve."

She stood up, smiling warmly at Vincent.

"Now, gentlemen, let us turn to slide two. We have a fifty-million-dollar sustainable logistics expansion in Rotterdam to approve."
