Chapter 22 - The Shadow of Damian Cole

By midnight, the storm had turned into freezing rain that battered against the reinforced glass of a private hangar at Gary/Chicago International Airport.

Sitting at a fold-out steel table inside the hangar’s operations room was Captain Miller’s former logistics chief, Jack Reynolds—now head of internal tactical security for the Bennett Foundation. On the table lay three high-frequency radios, an encrypted satellite phone, and satellite reconnaissance photos of an abandoned commercial dry dock along the Calumet River on Chicago's industrial South Side.

"Cole arrived in Chicago forty-eight hours ago on a forged Canadian passport," Reynolds reported, pointing an ink pen at a cluster of rusted corrugated steel warehouses. "He has eight men with him. Ex-mercenaries who worked the maritime escort details in the Indian Ocean. They aren't trying to smuggle contraband, Mr. Moretti. They're using the Newark container as a diversion."

"A diversion for what?" Vincent asked, leaning over the blueprints, wearing a heavy tactical windbreaker over a dark sweater.

"The Anna Maria," Anna answered from the corner of the room, sipping black coffee. She hadn't stayed behind in the penthouse; in this family, the strategy was forged together. "The container in Newark was meant to pull federal scrutiny to the East Coast. While the Coast Guard and FBI are combing through manifests in New Jersey, Cole’s team is preparing to board the Anna Maria’s sister vessel, the Crest of Michigan, when it enters the Saint Lawrence Seaway tomorrow night."

"Why the Seaway?" Reynolds asked.

"Because the Seaway is narrow," Anna explained coldly. "If a five-hundred-foot freighter loses steering in the Welland Canal, it bottlenecks eighty percent of North American steel and grain transit. Cole shorted fifty million dollars in Great Lakes maritime futures through an offshore fund in Cyprus three days ago. If our ship grounds in the canal, the market crashes, our insurance syndicate collapses, and Cole walks away with eighty million dollars in clean cash."

Vincent looked at the aerial photographs of the Calumet dock. In the shadow of a rusted gantry crane, three black utility vans were parked behind an old shipping container.

"Where is Cole’s command hub right now?" Vincent demanded.

"Right there," Reynolds said, tapping the Calumet warehouse. "They’re transmitting the automated override codes to the vessel’s satellite navigation array using an illegal high-gain microwave uplink on the old grain elevator roof."

Vincent checked the slide of his Beretta, racking the chamber with a crisp, metallic snap before holstering it beneath his jacket.

"Call the Coast Guard Investigative Service, Arthur," Vincent commanded. "Tell them to intercept the Newark container with full hazmat protocols. Give them the unredacted digital ledger proving Damian Cole’s biometric signature on the Brazilian bill of lading."

"And what about Calumet?" Arthur asked, adjusting his glasses.

Vincent zipped up his tactical jacket, turning toward the door.

"Cole thinks he's fighting an executive who hides behind legal motions," Vincent said, his voice dropping into that terrifying, low register that had once made the Five Families shiver. "He forgot that before I wore Italian suits, I ran my father’s docks with a wrench. Jack, prep the team. We’re pulling the plug on his uplink before sunrise."

Anna stepped in front of him, reaching out to straighten the collar of his windbreaker. Her fingers lingered against his chest, right over the steady, calm beating of his heart.

"Bring him back alive, Vincent," Anna said softly, her eyes clear and unblinking. "A dead mercenary tells no stories. A living traitor signs confessions that clear our name forever."

May you like

Vincent leaned down, pressing a firm, lingering kiss to her lips.

"I always come home to you, Anna," he breathed. "Always."
