Chapter 4 - Unraveling

The fallout from the gala was swift, brutal, and utterly comprehensive. Within forty-eight hours, the video clip of Faye’s speech had gone viral across medical forums and social media channels, igniting a firestorm of public outrage. Investigative journalists, tipped off by Harrington Health Capital’s legal team, began unearthing the inconsistencies in Lawson’s emergency statements.

Firefighters from the Whitmore Grand Hotel rescue team came forward with official incident logs. Their statements confirmed that a man matching Lawson’s description had explicitly declared his family "all accounted for" while rushing a colleague down the emergency stairwell, ignoring a known pediatric allergy emergency happening mere feet away.

Lawson sat alone in his darkened apartment, the television glowing with news reports analyzing his professional collapse. His phone buzzed incessantly—not with calls of support, but with emails from hospital HR, text messages from former colleagues distancing themselves, and formal notices of asset freezes tied to ongoing legal proceedings.

The door buzzer rang. Lawson ignored it. It rang again, longer and harder.

Stumbling to his feet, Lawson pulled open the door, expecting process servers. Instead, standing in the hallway was Tess, her suitcase packed, her eyes red-rimmed and furious.

"It’s over, Lawson," she spat out, her voice shaking. "The hospital board didn't just suspend my tech certification; they launched a full investigation into our department's supply chain logs. They found out you manipulated the scheduling so we’d be assigned to the same out-of-town conferences."

"Tess, wait, listen to me, we can fix this—" Lawson reached out, his voice desperate.

"Fix what?" she shouted, slapping his hand away. "You told me you were separated, you told me your wife was independent, and you told me you were going to protect me. But the second things got hard on that 17th floor, you threw everyone under the bus to save your own skin. You're a coward, Lawson. You always were."

She brushed past him into the elevator lobby, leaving the door wide open.

Lawson sank to the floor of Harrington’s high-rise apartment, his head in his hands. For the first time in his meticulously orchestrated life, he realized the terrifying truth: he had gambled everything on his ambition, stepped on everyone who trusted him, and in the end, he was entirely, utterly alone.
