Chapter 9 - Checkmate

Nathaniel took a step forward, his jaw tight, his hands clenching into fists. "You're insane, Julian."
"Sign it!" Julian roared, pressing his thumb against the detonator button. "Or I burn everything we built!"
Claire didn't panic. She didn't flinch. Instead, she quietly pulled her phone from her jacket and tapped the screen once.
A high-pitched digital chime echoed through the massive warehouse speakers.
Julian’s face twitched. He looked down at the digital detonator in his hand. The screen was blinking red, displaying a simple message: ACCESS DENIED. SERVER ISOLATED.
"What... what is this?" Julian stammered, frantically pressing the button. "What did you do?!"
"Did you really think I spent the last three days resting?" Claire said calmly, walking forward with complete authority. "While you were waiting for us to show up here, my technical security team traced your signal origin back to this warehouse three hours ago."
"I air-gapped the master servers at 4:00 PM today, Julian," Nathaniel added, his confidence returning as he stood side-by-side with his wife. "Your virus hit a dead end five minutes before we even pulled into the parking lot."
Julian backed up, his eyes wild with desperation. "No... no! I am an Everhart! I built this!"
"You built nothing," Claire said coldly. "You ran away when the family needed leadership, and you came back like a thief in the night to steal what Nathaniel spent six years protecting."
Blaring red siren lights suddenly illuminated the fogged glass windows of the warehouse. The heavy steel doors burst open, and dozens of federal agents swept into the building with flashlights and drawn weapons.
"Julian Everhart! Put your hands in the air!" an agent bellowed over a megaphone.
Julian looked at his brother, then at Claire, realizing that his grand return had turned into his absolute checkmate. The detonator slipped from his trembling fingers, shattering on the cold concrete floor. He slowly raised his hands as federal agents swarmed the platform.
As they led Julian away in handcuffs, he passed close to Claire.

"Who are you?" Julian whispered, his voice broken.
Claire looked him dead in the eye. "I am Claire Everhart."
