Chapter 7 - Shadows of the Past

While the public victory was absolute, an unsettling quiet settled over the Everhart penthouse that evening.
Claire sat by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, watching the rain fall over the Seattle skyline. Despite winning the corporate battle and clearing her name, she felt a lingering shadow in her mind.
Nathaniel walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin gently on her shoulder.
"You should be celebrating," he murmured softly. "The board unanimously reaffirmed your position, Lucas is facing prosecution, and the press is praising you as a financial hero."
Claire leaned back into his warmth, holding his hands. "It's not over, Nate."
Nathaniel paused. "What do you mean?"
"When I was going through the final layer of Lucas's encrypted files today, I found something strange. Lucas didn't have the technical skills to build that offshore laundering network. Someone else designed it for him."
Nathaniel’s grip on her tightened slightly. "Who?"
"The transfer signatures were routed through an old server protocol... one that hasn't been used since your older brother disappeared six years ago."
Nathaniel froze completely.
Julian Everhart. The brilliant, ruthless older brother who was presumed dead after his private yacht went missing in the Mediterranean six years ago—the man whose sudden disappearance had forced Nathaniel to take over the empire prematurely.
"Julian?" Nathaniel whispered, his voice laced with shock.
"The encryption style was his signature, Nate," Claire turned in his arms to look into his eyes. "Lucas wasn't acting alone. Someone was pulling his strings from the shadows, using him to test our defenses."
Before Nathaniel could respond, his private encrypted phone rang on the desk.
Nathaniel picked it up and pressed speaker.
A distorted, deep voice spoke from the receiver, laughing softly.
"Congratulations on saving your little empire, Nathaniel. And congratulations to your clever, beautiful wife. She truly is as sharp as they said."
Nathaniel’s eyes burned with cold anger. "Julian?"

"Did you really think a broken dress and a stupid CEO were the main event?" the voice purred. "This was just the opening act, little brother. Tell Claire I enjoyed watching her play auditor. Let's see how well she plays when the stakes are real."
The call disconnected.
