Chapter 8 - A Sister's Wrath

Monday morning arrived under a blanket of heavy, gray clouds that threatened rain. The marble steps of the county municipal courthouse were swarming with reporters, camera crews, and curious onlookers.

When the white transport van from the county jail pulled up to the curb, the flashing cameras erupted like lightning.

Vanessa stepped out, flanked by two armed bailiffs. She was wearing a borrowed, ill-fitting gray sweatshirt and sweatpants provided by the state. Her hands were cuffed in front of her waist, connected to a chain around her middle. Gone was the glamorous blonde influencer from Friday night; in her place stood a frantic, disheveled woman whose eyes darted around in absolute terror.

Robert and Diane were waiting at the base of the steps, looking like they hadn't slept in seventy-two hours. Robert’s hair was unkempt, his suit rumpled and stained with cheap coffee.

"Vanessa! Baby!" Diane shrieked, lunging toward the police barricade. "We're here! Mommy’s here!"

"Mom! Daddy! Get me out of here!" Vanessa wailed, her voice shrill and cracked. "They put me in a room with insane people! The food was cold! They took my jewelry! Look at my hands!"

"Quiet down, inmate," one of the bailiffs barked, pulling her firmly up the steps.

Just then, my black Maybach pulled up to the reserved legal entrance at the side of the courthouse. Vance opened the door, and I stepped out, dressed in a bespoke charcoal-gray three-piece suit, my leather shoes gleaming, Julian Ross walking briskly at my side.

The crowd gasped as they spotted me. Microphones were thrust into the air, journalists shouting over one another:

*"Mr. Vance! Are you pressing for maximum sentencing?"*

*"Is it true your sister embezzled over fifty thousand dollars?"*

*"Do you have a comment on the Sterling family breaking the engagement?"*

Vanessa heard the noise and snapped her head in my direction. When her bloodshot eyes locked onto mine, the terror on her face twisted instantly into a demonic, unfiltered fury.

"ETHAN!" she screamed, thrashing violently against the bailiffs' grip. "YOU RUINED MY LIFE! YOU JEALOUS, MISERABLE FREAK!"

The cameras swiveled toward her, capturing every spit-flecked word.

"You did this because Bradley loved me!" she shrieked, tears and saliva flying from her mouth. "You did this because Mom and Dad always loved me more than you! You were always just the leftover kid! The mistake! Daddy wished you were never born! He told me so!"

The entire courtyard went completely still. Even the reporters paused, stunned by the sheer venom pouring from her throat.

Robert Miller froze, his face turning an ash-gray color so pale he looked ready to collapse. He grabbed the iron barricade for support, staring at me with horror as Vanessa’s words hung in the cold morning air.

I didn't stop walking. I didn't flinch. I didn't even adjust my tie.

I walked up the broad stone steps, paused five paces away from where the guards were struggling to hold my sister down, and looked directly into her wild, unhinged eyes.

"You're right about one thing, Vanessa," I said, my voice carrying clearly through the silent crowd. "They did love you more. And look where their love brought you."

With that, I turned and walked through the heavy bronze doors of the justice building, leaving her screams to echo off the stone walls outside.
