Chapter 7 - The Offer on the Table

Arthur Sterling was eighty-one years old, walked with a polished ebony cane, and had eyes as sharp as cut flint. When he entered my private office, he didn't look like a man whose family had just been dragged through a tabloid circus. He looked like an apex predator evaluating a potential partner.

He sat down in the leather chair, rested both hands on the brass handle of his cane, and studied me for several long moments.

"You handled that like a veteran, young man," Arthur said, his voice gravelly and firm. "Most men your age would have thrown a fist, made a scene, or folded under the embarrassment of having food dumped on their heads."

"I don't react to theatrical tantrums, Mr. Sterling," I replied calmly, pouring two glasses of sparkling mineral water. "I let consequences do the heavy lifting."

Arthur chuckled, a dry, rattling sound. "Bradley is an idiot. His father spoiled him rotten, and as a result, he couldn't see a venomous snake if it wrapped itself around his windpipe. Vanessa Miller was bleeding my grandson dry. Do you know she convinced him to wire sixty thousand dollars for a 'wedding planner deposit' that went straight into her personal offshore trading account?"

I didn't flinch. "I'm not surprised."

"I've been trying to extract my family from that parasite for six months," Arthur said, leaning forward. "Your little exhibition at Bellamy’s handed me the iron-clad legal cause I needed to strip her access and pull Bradley out before he signed a marriage certificate. For that, Ethan Vance, I owe you a debt."

"You don't owe me anything, sir. I simply settled an account with my own past."

"Perhaps," Arthur smiled thinly. "But in my world, a favor recognized is a foundation for business. I know who you really are, Ethan. You're not just the owner of Bellamy’s. You control Apex Logistics, the software infrastructure powering ninety percent of cold-chain transport in the tri-state area."

I said nothing, confirming his knowledge only with a steady gaze.

"My development group is breaking ground on a three-hundred-million-dollar commercial hub at the harbor," Arthur continued. "We need a primary logistics anchor. I came here today to offer Apex the exclusive twenty-year master contract."

The magnitude of the offer hung heavy in the air. That contract would elevate Apex Logistics from a regional powerhouse to a nationally recognized infrastructure giant. It was worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

"There's only one condition," Arthur added, tapping his cane against the floor.

"And what is that?"

"Total legal closure. Your sister cannot be allowed to plea down to a misdemeanor and drag this through civil litigation where my grandson might be called as a witness. She must plead guilty to the felony fraud and the assault. I want her sealed away, legally and socially, where she can never attach her name to the Sterling family again."

I looked out the window at the harbor where the new terminal would rise. The very empire my parents had mocked me for building was now receiving the ultimate crown of validation—while the daughter they worshiped was headed for a state corrections facility.

"You don't have to worry about that, Mr. Sterling," I said, reaching out to shake his weathered hand. "My sister made her bed under the bright lights of my restaurant. Now, she's going to sleep in it."
