Chapter 6 - Public Disgrace

By Sunday morning, the story was no longer just local gossip. It was a national sensation.
A major media outlet picked up the security footage leaked from Bellamy’s, pairing it with the viral smartphone clips recorded by the patrons. The headlines wrote themselves:
**"SPOOILED HEIRESS ARRESTED AFTER ATTACKING RESTAURANT TYCOON BROTHER"**
**"THE BIRTHDAY TANTRUM THAT LED TO HANDCUFFS: THE FALL OF VANESSA MILLER"**
Social media commentators tore into Vanessa with savage precision. Old classmates from high school and college came forward, sharing stories of her cruelty, her entitlement, and the trail of broken friendships she had left behind. Her former colleagues posted screenshots of her bullying junior staff and bragging about her nonexistent "corporate wealth."
At ten o’clock that morning, Julian Ross entered my private study at Bellamy’s. Downstairs, the restaurant was closed for deep cleaning and preparation for Sunday brunch, but the staff was already abuzz with quiet excitement.
"Ethan, we have an unexpected development," Julian said, laying an iPad on my table.
"What did she do now?"
"It’s not her. It’s her fiancé."
I raised an eyebrow. "Bradley?"
Bradley was the scion of a prominent regional real estate developer. Vanessa had spent the last eighteen months flaunting their engagement, using his family’s name to bully boutique owners and secure VIP reservations across the state. They were scheduled to have a lavish half-million-dollar wedding in October—a wedding Robert had privately begged me to contribute toward just two weeks ago.
"Bradley’s father just issued a formal press release," Julian explained. "The engagement is officially called off. Bradley has returned to Chicago, and their family legal team has issued a cease-and-desist order preventing Vanessa or any member of the Miller family from contacting them."
I tapped the screen, skimming the legal statement. The words were brutal: *‘The Sterling Family holds itself to the highest standards of integrity, respect, and decency. In light of the disturbing criminal actions and fraudulent misrepresentations demonstrated by Miss Vanessa Miller, all personal and familial associations have been permanently severed.’*
"She lost her golden ticket," I murmured.
"Worse," Julian added. "Bradley’s family was the primary guarantor on the lease of her luxury penthouse in the arts district. Without their backing, the landlord served an immediate three-day eviction notice this morning. When she steps out of Central Booking tomorrow, she won't even have a bed to sleep in."
Before I could answer, the door of the study flew open.
Marcus rushed in, looking visibly rattled. "Mr. Vance, I apologize for interrupting, but there’s an elderly man at the front gates. He’s refusing to leave. He says his name is Arthur Sterling."
I paused. Arthur Sterling was Bradley’s grandfather—the founder of the Sterling Real Estate Empire, a legendary businessman known for his ruthless pragmatism and unmatched influence in the state’s commerce council.
"Did he come to threaten me on behalf of his grandson?" I asked.
May you like
"No, sir," Marcus said, catching his breath. "He said... he said he came to thank you."
