Chapter 6 - Vanessa’s Desperate Gambit

Three weeks passed.
Rikers Island was doing its work on Richard Whitmore. Stripped of his tailored suits, his luxury watches, and his entourage of sycophants, he had been placed in protective custody after three separate inmates attempted to extort him for protection money he no longer had.
Meanwhile, Vanessa Cross was sitting under strict house arrest at her sister’s cramped apartment in Queens, fitted with an ankle monitor, awaiting formal sentencing on federal conspiracy charges.
Her life of private jets, five-thousand-dollar designer gowns, and VIP galas had evaporated overnight. She had believed she was destined to be the next queen of New York high society; instead, she was facing five years in federal prison.
Desperation makes people foolish. But pure, unadulterated vanity makes them reckless.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Lily was scheduled for an equestrian therapy session at an elite private stable in Westchester—a program Alexander had arranged to help her transition smoothly through the family changes.
The stable was private, quiet, and surrounded by dense autumn woods.
A silver sedan with tinted windows had been idling down the road for two hours. Inside sat Vanessa, wearing an oversized trench coat, a dark wig, and sunglasses, clutching a disposable burner phone. Beside her was a disgraced private investigator she had hired with the last twenty thousand dollars of cash she had hidden in her sister’s attic.
"Are you sure the kid is in there?" Vanessa hissed, chewing her manicured nails down to the quick.
"Yeah," the investigator muttered, adjusting his binoculars. "The black SUV dropped her off ten minutes ago. Just the nanny and the kid. No cops."
Vanessa’s eyes gleamed with manic desperation.
Her plan was simple, born of pure panic: she would grab Lily, take her to an abandoned property in New Jersey, and demand Catherine drop the federal charges and release twenty million dollars from the offshore trust. She believed Catherine, as a mother, would fold immediately.
"Get the door open," Vanessa ordered, pulling a can of industrial mace from her bag. "We grab her, we throw her in the back, and we drive straight to the safehouse. Move!"
The two of them slipped out of the car, hurrying through the side entrance of the indoor riding arena.
The arena was quiet, the scent of hay and cedar shavings thick in the air. In the center of the ring, Lily was gently brushing the mane of a small brown pony, guided by her riding instructor.
"Lily!" Vanessa called out, forcing a sweet, trembling smile onto her face as she stepped into the ring. "Lily, sweetie! It’s Auntie Vanessa!"
Lily looked up, blinking in confusion, taking an instinctive step back behind the pony. "Auntie Vanessa?"
"Your mommy sent me to pick you up, darling," Vanessa purred, quickening her pace, her hand inside her coat clutching the zip-ties. "There’s an emergency, and we need to go right now—"
"I wouldn't take another step if I were you, Miss Cross."
A voice, low and resonant as rolling thunder, cut through the quiet arena.
From the shadows of the stable stalls stepped Alexander Sterling.
He wasn't wearing a suit today. He wore tactical cargo trousers, heavy combat boots, and a fitted black jacket. Behind him, emerging silently from three separate access points, were six elite private security contractors, all wearing tactical gear with sidearms drawn and held at the low-ready.
Vanessa froze, her heart leaping into her throat. "What... what is this?"
The private investigator she had hired took one look at Alexander, dropped his hands to his sides, and fell to his knees on the dirt. "I'm out! I don't know her! I was just paid for surveillance!"
Vanessa spun around, but the exit was blocked by two more guards. She looked back at Alexander, her face twisting into a mask of snarling hatred.
"You think you can scare me?!" Vanessa shrieked, pulling the can of mace from her pocket. "You ruined my life! I was going to be Richard’s wife! I was going to have everything! Catherine is a boring, pathetic little mouse who didn't deserve him!"
Alexander walked toward her, slow and measured, without even blinking at the weapon in her hand.
"A mouse?" Alexander murmured, stopping three feet from her. His presence was so massive, so suffocating, that Vanessa instinctively took a trembling step back. "My sister was building clean-water initiatives in Africa while you were sleeping with married executives for rent money, Miss Cross."
Alexander snapped his fingers.
Two female security operatives lunged forward with terrifying speed. Before Vanessa could press the nozzle of the mace, her wrist was locked in an arm-bar, the canister kicked across the dirt, and she was forced face-first onto the wooden railing of the arena.
The sharp click of zip-ties binding her wrists echoed through the barn.
"Let go of me!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing wildly. "I have rights! I’m under federal probation!"
"Not anymore," Nathaniel’s voice sounded from the arena entrance.
My youngest brother strolled into the light, holding a phone connected to the US Attorney's office.
"Attempted kidnapping of a minor, aggravated stalking, violation of federal bail conditions, and conspiracy to commit extortion," Nathaniel said smoothly, holding up the phone. "The marshals are outside, Vanessa. Your bail has been permanently revoked. You will not be serving your time at a minimum-security camp. You are going straight to a maximum-security facility in upstate New York."
Vanessa’s wig had slipped off, revealing her tangled hair beneath. She looked past Alexander and saw me standing by the stall doors, holding Lily gently in my arms, shielding my daughter’s eyes against my shoulder.
"Catherine!" Vanessa wailed, tears of genuine panic streaming down her face. "Catherine, please! Tell them! We were friends! I made a mistake! Richard manipulated me! He forced me to do it!"
I looked at her, my expression as smooth and unyielding as polished diamond.
"You told Richard that my blood would wash off the cellar floor, Vanessa," I said quietly. "I heard you through the vents when he came upstairs. You laughed while I was bleeding."
Vanessa’s jaw trembled. All the bravado, all the vanity, all the toxic ambition drained out of her, leaving only a terrified, broken young woman staring down the barrel of a decade behind bars.
"Take her away," Alexander ordered.

The federal marshals marched in, dragging Vanessa Cross kicking and screaming out into the pouring rain, her designer heels dragging through the mud, never to set foot in our world again.
