Chapter 2 - The Sterling Reckoning Begins

The trauma bay at St. Jude’s Private Pavilion had been completely cleared of other patients by the time our convoy arrived.

Four black Escalades, their tinted windows impenetrable to the gathering street cameras, had escorted the ambulance from the estate. Behind us, Richard was being transported in the back of a steel-caged police van, destined for the county detention center’s maximum intake ward.

I sat on the edge of the examination bed, wearing an open-backed hospital gown while three senior trauma specialists cleaned and treated my back. Alexander stood near the doorway, his massive frame blocking the entrance, arms crossed over his chest. His knuckles were white, his teeth clenched so tightly that the muscles in his jaw pulsed with violent restraint.

"Alexander," I whispered, the local anesthetic finally numbing the worst of the searing fire across my skin. "Where is Lily?"

Alexander’s expression softened immediately. The fearsome warlord of Sterling Logistics vanished, replaced by the protective older brother who used to carry me on his shoulders through our grandfather's vineyards.

"She’s safe, Cathy," he said, stepping to my side and taking my cold hand between his calloused palms. "Maria and three of our private security personnel brought her straight to the penthouse at the Four Seasons. She thinks you had an allergic reaction to the cake. She’s watching cartoons, eating hot chocolate, and waiting for you."

Tears pricked my eyes. "She didn't see... she didn't see what he did?"

"She didn't see a thing," Alexander promised, his voice cracking slightly with emotion. "I swear it to you on our mother’s memory. She is untouched."

The door swung open, and Ethan walked in, accompanied by Dr. Vance, the chief of surgery. Ethan’s phone was pressed to his ear, his face carved from dark marble.

"Liquidate their short positions immediately," Ethan was saying into the receiver. "Tell the Singapore desk to begin dumping Whitmore Logistics commercial paper at the opening bell. Every sovereign fund we partner with is to pull their debt facilities by dawn. Yes. Completely."

He hung up, slipping the phone into his breast pocket, and walked over to my bedside. He looked down at the bandages covering my shoulders and back. For a brief second, his composed mask cracked, exposing an abyss of raw, unadulterated rage.

"Arthur Davis is trying to post bail," Ethan said quietly.

Nathaniel entered behind him, unbuttoning his suit jacket and placing his laptop on the mobile bedside cart. "He won't succeed. I just spoke with Judge Holloway. The arraignment is scheduled for nine o’clock tomorrow morning. Given the weapon used, the evidence of premeditation, and the fact that Richard attempted to intimidate witnesses in front of responding officers, he will be held without bond until the preliminary hearing."

"And Vanessa?" I asked, my voice steadying. "Where is she?"

Nathaniel allowed a cold, humorless smirk to touch his lips. "Miss Vanessa Cross is currently sitting in a hotel room, frantically contacting publicists. She believes this is her grand debut. Look at this."

Nathaniel spun the laptop toward me.

A trending video was already dominating social media. It was Vanessa, filmed outside our mansion gates while the police cruisers were pulling away. She had mascara artistically smeared beneath her eyes, dabbing at her face with a handkerchief.

*"It was terrifying,"* Vanessa sobbed to a freelance entertainment reporter. *"Catherine has been mentally unstable for months. She became completely unhinged over an accidental spill on my gown. She attacked Richard, tore at herself, and threw herself down the cellar stairs. Richard was only trying to restrain her! He is an innocent man, a devoted father, and I will stand by him through this horrific witch hunt!"*

The comments below the video were moving at thousands per second. Half the public was calling Richard a monster, but the other half—fueled by paid bots and Richard's swift PR retainer—was questioning my sanity, dragging my name through the mud, calling me a jealous, vindictive housewife desperate to ruin a prominent tech-logistics mogul.

"She’s good," I said, a bitter chuckle escaping my lips. "She's been studying Richard’s playbook for two years."

"She’s an amateur playing with high-voltage wire," Nathaniel corrected coldly. "What she doesn't know is that Alexander has had an investigative team embedded in Richard's corporate offices for six months."

I blinked, looking up at Alexander. "You knew?"

Alexander looked down, guilt flickering across his broad face. "We respected your boundaries, Cathy. You told us nine years ago that you wanted to be independent. You wanted to prove that you could build a life without the Sterling name protecting you. So we stayed back. But we never stopped watching over you from the shadows."

"Six months ago," Ethan picked up the thread, "Richard began transferring liquidity out of Whitmore Enterprises' primary reserve accounts into shell entities registered in the Cayman Islands. He wasn't just cheating on you, Catherine. He was setting up an offshore trust in Vanessa Cross’s name. He intended to strip Whitmore Enterprises down to an empty shell, declare corporate insolvency, divorce you, and leave you with zero marital assets and full custody of an impoverished household while he and Vanessa fled to Zurich."

The air left my lungs.

Nine years. I had cooked his meals when we were starting out in that cramped two-bedroom apartment. I had edited his business proposals until three in the morning. When his first venture failed, I had secretly funneled five million dollars through an anonymous angel investment fund to keep him afloat—money he arrogantly boasted was proof of his 'innate business genius.'

And all along, he had been calculating how to discard me like trash.

"He owes forty million to the Sterling Maritime Fleet for his third-party freight," Alexander added casually. "He doesn't know it, because we operate through nine holding companies. But the moment the markets open tomorrow, every ship carrying Whitmore cargo will drop anchor in international waters and refuse to dock until his accounts are settled in full."

"He will default on his retail contracts within forty-eight hours," Nathaniel noted, clicking through a series of legal filings on his screen. "Target, Walmart, and Amazon have clause-seven morality cancellations. By noon tomorrow, Richard Whitmore won't have a company. He will have a mountain of unpayable debt, a felony indictment, and a jail cell."

I closed my eyes, letting the reality wash over me. For years, I had made myself small to let Richard feel large. I had hidden my heritage, swallowed his condescension, and endured his subtle cruelties because I believed in the sanctity of our vows.

That woman was dead. She had died on the cold stones of the wine cellar, beneath thirty strikes of a riding crop.

"No," I said softly, opening my eyes.

The three brothers looked at me.

"Don't destroy Whitmore Enterprises completely," I commanded, my voice ringing with a cold authority that made all three of them pause.

Ethan arched an eyebrow. "Catherine?"

"Whitmore Enterprises has twelve hundred innocent employees," I said, my gaze locking with Ethan’s. "And more importantly, Richard loves that company more than he loves God, more than he loved me, and more than he loves Lily. If you liquidate it, he becomes a tragic martyr to his peers. A victim of a hostile corporate takeover."

I sat up straighter, ignoring the dull ache in my back.

"I want the company intact," I said, my eyes gleaming with ice. "I want Nathaniel to use his offshore fraud to seize ninety percent of the voting shares as compensation for domestic terror and corporate embezzlement. I want Richard to sit in a courtroom and watch me take his CEO seat. I want him to watch me fire him. And then, I want him to watch Vanessa abandon him the second she realizes he is penniless."

Silence settled over the private suite.

Then, slowly, a wide, predatory grin spread across Alexander’s face.

Ethan let out a low, appreciative laugh and leaned down, kissing the top of my head. "There she is. William Sterling’s daughter."

May you like

Nathaniel cracked his knuckles, pulling his laptop closer. "I'll revise the filings immediately. We won't just crush him, Catherine. We are going to erase him."
