Chapter 5 - The Saturday Showdown

Saturday morning, the driveway of Sharon and Lawrence’s suburban brick house was already occupied by Melanie’s SUV.
When Thomas, Noah, Mia, and I walked up the front steps, we didn't wait to be invited. Thomas used his spare house key to unlock the heavy oak front door and pushed it open.
The living room was quiet.
Sharon sat on her floral sofa holding a cup of tea, looking smug and triumphant, while Melanie sat beside her scrolling through her phone. Lawrence stood near the fireplace, looking thoroughly uncomfortable.
"Well!" Sharon barked, setting her teacup down with a sharp clack. "You finally decided to show up. Where is the child? Did you skip the clinic because you knew the truth would come out?"
Mia instinctively stepped behind my leg, clutching my coat pocket. Noah immediately stepped forward, placing himself between his little sister and his grandmother, his eight-year-old posture stiff with defiance.
"We didn't go to your clinic, Mom," Thomas announced, stepping into the center of the living room, holding a thick manila legal folder in his hand.
Sharon smiled nastily. "Ran away from the truth, did you? Typical. Just like your wife—"
"Shut your mouth, Sharon," Thomas roared, his voice booming through the house with such terrifying authority that Melanie dropped her phone onto the rug.
Thomas pulled the certified legal DNA report from the manila folder and tossed it flat onto the coffee table right in front of her.
"Read it," Thomas commanded.
Sharon frowned, picking up the document, her eyes scanning the medical seals and the bold summary text.
PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 99.9999%
CONCLUSION: THOMAS MERCER CANNOT BE EXCLUDED AS THE BIOLOGICAL FATHER OF MIA MERCER.
The color drained from Sharon's face so fast she looked like she had seen a ghost. Her hands began to shake violently, the papers rustling against her fingertips.
"This... this is forged!" Sharon shrieked, jumping up from the sofa. "You paid a lab off! This isn't real!"
"It's a court-admissible, chain-of-custody legal document processed by Vanguard Medical Laboratories," a calm, deep voice spoke from the front hallway.
We all turned.
Stepping through the front door, holding his own copy of the dossier, was Lawrence.
"Lawrence, have you lost your mind?!" Sharon screamed at her husband. "You're taking their side over mine?!"
"I'm taking the side of reality, Sharon," Lawrence said, his voice cold, steady, and exhausted. "For six years, you have tortured this little girl because she didn't have your nose. You drove our son away. You alienated our grandson. And you posted vicious, defamatory lies about an innocent mother on the internet."
Lawrence looked at Thomas, then looked down at Mia.
He walked slowly across the room, stopping a few feet from where my little girl stood hiding behind my coat. He knelt down on one knee so he was at eye level with her.
"Mia," Lawrence said softly, his voice cracking with genuine remorse. "Grandpa is so, so sorry for the things your grandmother said. You look just like your great-grandmother—the kindest, sweetest woman I ever knew. You are a Mercer through and through. Can you ever forgive me?"
Mia peeked out from behind my coat, looking up at her grandfather's tired, honest face. Slowly, cautiously, she stepped forward and offered him a small, forgiving smile.
"I forgive you, Grandpa," Mia whispered.

Lawrence closed his eyes, pulling her into a gentle, tearful hug.
Sharon stood frozen by the sofa, looking around the room as her entire kingdom of manipulation and cruelty collapsed around her feet.
