Chapter 4 - The Envelope on the Counter

Friday evening at 4:30 PM, an email notification pinged on Thomas's laptop.

SUBJECT: CERTIFIED LABORATORY RESULTS — CASE #VN-88421.

We were sitting at the kitchen island. Noah and Mia were upstairs building a Lego castle, completely removed from the adult storm brewing downstairs.

Thomas stared at the unread email on the screen. His hand hovered over the trackpad, his fingers trembling ever so slightly.

"Open it, Thomas," I said gently, resting my hand over his.

He clicked the mouse.

The PDF document expanded across the screen, displaying official medical seals, cryptographic verification codes, and the multi-page genetic marker comparison chart.

Thomas scrolled down past the technical jargon directly to the summary conclusion block.

I watched his face as he read the first line:

PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 99.9999%

CONCLUSION: THOMAS MERCER CANNOT BE EXCLUDED AS THE BIOLOGICAL FATHER OF MIA MERCER.

A massive, ragged breath escaped Thomas's chest. He dropped his head into his hands, his shoulders shaking as the enormous weight of his mother's psychological abuse finally lifted off his shoulders.

"It's official," Thomas whispered, his voice thick with tears. "She's mine. Every single marker matches."

"I never doubted it for a second, Thomas," I said, my own eyes welling with tears of profound relief. "Neither did you."

Thomas wiped his eyes, sitting up straight, a cold, hard determination setting into his jaw. He reached for his phone and opened a group chat that included Sharon, Lawrence, Melanie, and himself.

He attached the certified PDF of the DNA lab results directly to the chat.

Then he typed a single message:

Thomas: "The legal DNA results are in. 99.9999% probability of paternity. Mia is my biological daughter. My family is off-limits permanently. Do not contact us ever again."

Within thirty seconds, his phone began ringing continuously.

He silenced the ringer, set the phone face down on the counter, and looked at me.

May you like

"Are you ready for Saturday?" Thomas asked.

I smiled—a bright, unwavering expression of absolute defense. "More than ready."
