Chapter 3 - The Medical Clinic

The sterile, quiet atmosphere of the regional medical laboratory on Thursday morning felt miles away from Sharon's toxic living room.

Mia sat comfortably in a padded leather chair, swinging her little legs, holding a coloring book while a gentle phlebotomist named Sarah prepped a tiny cotton swab for a simple buccal cheek collection.

"All done, sweetie," Sarah smiled warmly, pulling the sterile swab away. "You were braver than most adults I see."

Mia beamed, holding up her coloring book. "Can I get a sticker?"

"You get two," Sarah laughed, placing two smiley-face stickers on Mia's jacket.

Noah stood beside his sister, patting her shoulder with an air of profound, eight-year-old protectiveness. "You did great, Mia. Just like a big girl."

Thomas stood near the door, holding the documentation clipboard, his signature signed beside mine on the chain-of-custody forms. Vanguard Medical Laboratories would process the multiplex STR DNA analysis—the exact genetic profiling used in legal paternity and maternity proceedings—with results certified within forty-eight hours.

As we walked out to the car, Thomas's phone rang again.

This time, it was Lawrence—Thomas's father.

Thomas accepted the call, putting it on speaker so I could hear.

"Thomas," Lawrence’s tired voice came through the receiver. "Your mother is out of control. She’s calling everyone in the family, telling them you've agreed to the Saturday clinic test. She’s telling people she’s going to prove once and for all that Mia isn't yours."

"Dad," Thomas said calmly. "Tell her she doesn't need to book a private clinic for Saturday. We already took care of the testing this morning."

There was a long silence on the line.

"You... you tested her?" Lawrence asked, sounding genuinely surprised. "Thomas, why would you let your mother push you into that? You know how cruel she's being."

"I didn't do it for Mom," Thomas replied cleanly. "I did it for my daughter. And when the legal results arrive on Friday afternoon, Mom is going to learn a very expensive, permanent lesson about accusing my wife and my child."

"What are you planning to do?" Lawrence asked nervously.

"You'll find out on Saturday, Dad," Thomas said, and ended the call.
