Chapter 6 - A New Dawn at Hawthorne Capital

Six months later, the marble lobby of Hawthorne Capital looked entirely different.

The cold, intimidating atmosphere had been replaced by a vibrant, collaborative energy. The reception desk was still white marble, but the air smelled of fresh orchids, and employees walked through the corridors with their heads held high, knowing that hard work and integrity mattered more than family bloodlines.

In the executive suite on the thirty-fifth floor, I sat behind the massive mahogany desk that had once belonged to Victoria.

My nameplate on the door read simply: Emily Hart Grant, Chairperson and Managing Director.

Victoria was currently facing trial for wire fraud and embezzlement, her high-priced defense lawyers struggling against the airtight forensic audit I had compiled. Margaret lived in quiet seclusion in her lakefront mansion, utterly isolated by her own arrogance.

And Caleb? Caleb had taken a bold step forward. He had left his quiet corner in IT and was now heading up the firm’s new philanthropic technology initiative, smiling more, breathing easier, and standing tall as a partner who built things instead of hiding from them.

The private elevator chimed softly.

Richard Hawthorne stepped in, holding two cups of coffee. He walked over to my desk, placing one cup down with a warm, approving smile.

“Good morning, Chairman Grant,” Richard said, gazing out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the sparkling Chicago River and the bright autumn sun rising over Lake Michigan. “The quarterly review numbers just came in. We’re up eighteen percent across every division.”

I took a sip of the coffee, looking out at the city where I had once been dismissed as a “receptionist in pearls.”

“Good,” I smiled, adjusting the pearl necklace around my neck—the very same pearls I had worn the day I took back my life. “Let’s keep building.”
