Chapter 1 - The Chime of Collapse

The heavy silence in the marble lobby of Hawthorne Capital felt thick enough to suffocate. Richard Hawthorne, the billionaire founder and majority owner of the firm, stood immobile in his charcoal suit, his piercing gaze locked onto Victoria Grant.

Behind Richard, Chief Legal Officer Marcus Vance and Head of Security David Vance stood like twin sentinels. They didn't look confused; they looked like executioners waiting for a nod.

Victoria’s composure fractured instantly. The haughty, untouchable CEO who had laughed off my warning just minutes ago was suddenly scrambling for words.

“Mr. Hawthorne—Richard,” Victoria stammered, her voice losing its polished, boardroom resonance. “This is a misunderstanding. Emily is just... my brother’s wife. She had a personal disagreement, and she’s exaggerating—she fell—”

“She fell?” Richard interrupted. His voice was quiet, but it carried across the entire open-plan lobby, silencing the whisper of the Chicago wind outside the floor-to-ceiling glass. “Mrs. Grant, I have served on this board for thirty years. I know what a fall looks like on polished Italian marble. And I know what a human handprint looks like across a person’s cheek.”

Richard turned his head slightly toward David Vance, the head of security.

“David,” Richard said evenly. “Pull the lobby security footage from camera four. Lock down the file. Make sure no one touches the server.”

“Already done, sir,” David replied crisply.

Victoria’s face drained of color until she looked translucent. She looked around the lobby, desperately seeking allies among the two hundred employees who had pretended not to watch. But every single pair of eyes was glued to the floor, the ceiling, or their computer screens. No one dared meet her gaze. The queen of Hawthorne Capital had just been dethroned in real-time, and her subjects were scattering before the debris could crush them.
