Chapter 5 - Choosing a New Legacy

Caleb stood in the middle of the lobby, the tension between his past and his present threatening to tear him apart. Margaret grabbed his arm, her nails digging into his sleeve.
“Caleb! Tell your wife to stop this insanity! She’s destroying our family! She’s ruined your sister!” Margaret hissed, shaking him by the arm.
Caleb looked at his mother, then down at his shoes, the old fear creeping into his posture. But then he looked at me—at the faint red mark still visible on my cheek where Victoria’s hand had struck me.
For the first time in our marriage, Caleb did not look away.
He slowly pulled his arm out of his mother’s grip. It wasn't a dramatic gesture, but it was absolute.
“No, Mom,” Caleb said, his voice trembling slightly, but growing stronger with every word. “Victoria hit my wife. She assaulted her in front of the entire company. And you... you spent five years treating Emily like she was invisible.”
Margaret gasped, clutching her chest. “Caleb! Have you lost your mind? You’re siding with her against your own blood?!”
“Emily didn't ruin our family, Mom,” Caleb said, stepping past his mother and standing squarely by my side. “Our family was rotten from the top down. And it’s about time someone cleaned it out.”
I felt a quiet warmth settle in my chest. I reached out and took Caleb’s hand. His fingers were shaking, but his grip was firm.

Margaret realized, with sudden, crushing finality, that her empire of intimidation had crumbled. Without Victoria in the executive suite, without their voting shares locked up by the board, and without Caleb bowing to her demands, the Grant matriarch was nothing more than an aging woman shouting in an empty room.
Without another word, Margaret turned on her heel and stormed out of the building, her dignity shattered behind her.
