Chapter 5 - The Ghost in the Safe

The air in the conference room seemed to drop ten degrees.

I didn't move. My fingers remained curled around the strap of my laptop bag, the soft hum of the HVAC suddenly sounding like a low, menacing growl in the back of my ears.

"Say that again," I whispered, stepping back toward the table.

"We pulled the financial routing numbers from a safe deposit box at First Chicago Trust," Detective Miller’s voice crackled through the speakerphone, tinny and detached against the quiet corporate boardroom. "The wire transfer was executed on November 14th, 2018—two weeks after the lab explosion. The recipient account was tied to Marcus Vance... excuse me, Marcus Vance’s corporate alias, but the primary beneficiary listed on the notary signature was David Lane."

David Lane.

My stomach plummeted as if I were dropping down an elevator shaft.

David had been my lead lab assistant—a brilliant, quiet kid from the University of Chicago whom I had personally mentored, trusted with my encryption keys, and treated like a younger brother. He had been standing right outside my office door the night of the fire.

The official police report seven years ago had concluded that David had perished in the blaze alongside me, his body burned beyond recognition near the south stairwell.

"David was in the lab," I said, my voice hardening as the pieces began to shift into a terrifying new pattern. "His remains were identified by dental records."

"That's the interesting part, Ms. Vance," Detective Miller replied, the sound of rustling paper coming through the line. "The coroner's office report from 2018 listed the second set of remains as male, roughly twenty-five to thirty. But when we pulled the dental charts from the city morgue this morning and cross-referenced them with federal dental insurance databases... the teeth in that jawbone didn't match David Lane's pediatric dental records from his home state of Ohio."

Beside me, Vincent slowly rose from his chair. The color had completely drained from his face for the second time in twenty-four hours.

"Whose teeth were they?" Vincent asked, his voice shaking with a sudden, cold dread.

"We don't know yet," Detective Miller said. "But we do know that David Lane didn't die in that fire. He checked into a private clinic in Zurich under an alias forty-eight hours after the explosion, carrying a flash drive containing the complete, unencrypted schematics of your core energy matrix."

The phone line clicked dead.

The silence in the 40th-floor boardroom returned, absolute and suffocating.

I slowly lowered my phone to the granite table. The victory of the corporate restructuring, the sweet taste of exposing Sophia, the righteous anger I had carried for seven long years—all of it suddenly dissolved into ash.

It wasn't just Sophia’s jealousy. It wasn't just an impulsive, murderous act of a desperate woman trying to clear her romantic rival out of the way.

The fire wasn't a tragic accident caused by a faulty gas valve. It had been a cover.

I turned my head slowly to look at Vincent. He was staring at the blank wall behind my chair, his eyes wide, his breathing shallow and rapid.

"David," Vincent whispered, his voice trembling as the realization hit him with the force of a physical blow. "David was your assistant. He had access to the master server. He helped Sophia write the override code."

"No," I said, my mind racing as every single memory of that night inverted itself, taking on a dark, calculated shape. "Sophia didn't just want me out of the way because of you, Vincent. She wanted the patent. And David didn't die in the fire—he was her partner."

Vincent looked at me, his hazel eyes wide with a terror I had never seen in him before. Not when the roof caved in seven years ago. Not when I walked back into his gala with his twins.

"If David is still alive," Vincent said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper, "and he has the unencrypted matrix... then he didn't just steal your life's work, Claire."

"He sold it," I finished, my fingers tightening until my knuckles turned white. "To the highest bidder on the international market. And whoever bought it... is currently building weapons using my design."
