Chapter 19 - Julian’s Final Leverage

Julian froze.
Every weapon in the chamber snapped upward, pointing directly at the catwalk where Vincent and I stepped into the harsh glare of the floodlights.
Julian slowly turned his head. When he saw me standing there, looking down at him from the very platform where he had once looked down at me choking on toxic smoke, a horrifying, fractured smile spread across his face.
"Elena," he whispered, a sound that was half a laugh and half a sob. "The ghost that refuses to rest."
"Hold your fire!" Lord Croft commanded his mercenaries, raising his silver-tipped cane. The old man stepped forward, looking up at me with cold, calculating curiosity. "So, you are the brilliant Dr. Vance. The mind that built an empire out of thin air, only to have it stolen by an incompetent charlatan."
"Shut up, Croft!" Julian snarled, his eyes bulging as he pulled a heavy semi-automatic pistol from his coat, leveling it shakingly at my chest. "You walked right into the tomb, Elena! Did you think you were safe? Did you think that cripple Moretti could protect you?"
"I don't need protection from you, Julian," I said, descending the rusted iron staircase slowly, step by step, completely ignoring the dozen red laser sights dancing across my chest and forehead. Vincent followed closely behind me, his weapon drawn and locked onto Julian’s head.
"You're a coward," I continued, my voice echoing off the fire-scarred walls. "Seven years ago, you couldn't even look me in the eye when you locked the blast doors. You made Sophia do it because you couldn't stomach the sight of your own treason. And now, you're hiding behind Aegis's mercenaries like a scared little boy."
"I built Moretti Tech!" Julian shrieked, saliva flying from his lips. "My face was on the cover of Forbes! My name was on the building!"
"Your name was on the lease," Vincent spat, his voice dropping into the chamber with the weight of an executioner’s axe. "The brilliance, the blood, and the patents belonged to her. And the money that funded your rise belonged to the people you defrauded."
Lord Croft let out a dry, amused chuckle. "He speaks the truth, Julian. You have become an unbearable operational liability. The SEC has seized our domestic accounts, our shell network has collapsed, and your pathetic attempt to ambush their convoy failed miserably."
Julian spun the gun toward Croft, his hand trembling violently. "You think you can dump me, Croft? I hold the master key! Without me, the extraction fails!"
"The extraction is already dead," I said, stepping onto the concrete floor of the chamber, barely fifteen feet from Julian.
I reached into my pocket and held up the matte-black flash drive—the original black-box telemetry drive from the fire.
Julian’s eyes locked onto it, and for the first time, pure, unadulterated terror replaced his rage. "Where did you get that?"
"From your grandfather’s chronometer," I said coldly. "The one place you thought no one would ever look. The federal prosecutors have already verified the digital signature. By sunrise, every intelligence agency in the free world will be hunting Aegis Group and every shell director who ever signed a contract with you."
Lord Croft’s impassive mask finally cracked. His silver eyes narrowed to lethal slits as he looked at the drive in my hand.
"Kill them," Croft ordered his men, his voice flat and merciless. "Kill them both and retrieve that drive."
Gunfire erupted.
Vincent shoved me behind a heavy steel support pillar just as a barrage of high-caliber rounds tore into the concrete, raining pulverized dust and sparks over our heads. Vincent returned fire with deadly accuracy, dropping two mercenaries in quick succession with clean headshots despite his shattered shoulder.
"Go for the terminal!" Vincent shouted over the deafening roar of automatic weapons. "Upload the kill-switch!"
I broke into a sprint through the crossfire, sliding across the slick concrete floor toward the main server bank. A mercenary stepped into my path, raising his rifle, but I drove the high-voltage taser directly into his neck. Five hundred thousand volts surged through his nervous system; he convulsed violently and crashed into the server rack, pulling a tangle of fiber-optic cables down with him.
I lunged for the master console, slamming the black flash drive into the terminal port.
*OVERRIDE SEQUENCE DETECTED.*
*INSERTING RECURSIVE VIRUS...*
"No!" Julian’s roar cut through the gunfire.
He charged at me from behind, his pistol discarded, lunging like a rabid animal. His hands locked around my throat, slamming me hard against the burning-hot server console. The breath exploded from my lungs as his thumbs dug into my windpipe, his face contorted in a mask of homicidal frenzy.
"If I burn, you burn with me, Elena!" he screamed, his spittle hitting my cheek. "This time, I’ll watch the flesh melt off your bones!"
Black spots danced in my vision as the oxygen was choked from my brain. I scratched at his hands, feeling the slickness of his sweat and the desperate, crushing strength of a madman.
Then, through the ringing in my ears, I heard the terminal chime: *VIRUS UPLOAD COMPLETE. PRIMARY CORE PURGE INITIATED.*
With the last ounce of my strength, I grabbed the heavy glass monitor from the terminal desk, swinging it with both hands, smashing the corner directly into the side of Julian’s head.
The glass shattered. Julian shrieked in agony, stumbling backward, clutching his bleeding temple.
I dropped to my hands and knees, coughing violently, gasping in great lungfuls of air as the terminal behind me began to flash a violent, strobing red:
