Chapter 11 - The Morning After the Blackout

The sun broke over the skyline of New York not with the chaotic wail of emergency sirens, but with the quiet hum of an electric grid functioning in perfect equilibrium. From the eighty-second floor of the Moretti Tower, the city looked like an intricate circuit board bathed in amber light. Every traffic light changed in sequence; every hospital generator purred at idle; every elevator rose and fell without a glitch.

We had saved the city from darkness, but the battlefield had simply shifted from iron levers and burning transformer coils to mahogany conference tables and federal indictments.

I washed the soot and grease from my hands in the private executive suite bathroom. In the mirror, the woman looking back bore little resemblance to the terrified, naive research scientist who had choked on toxic smoke seven years ago, screaming Julian’s name while he barred the heavy lab doors from the outside. The scars beneath my collarbone remained, hidden under an immaculate tailored charcoal blazer, but my eyes were cold, steady, and sharp.

When I stepped into the adjoining lounge, the tension in my chest eased. Curled up on a leather sectional, wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket, were my seven-year-old twins, Leo and Maya. Beside them sat Marcus, Vincent’s head of private security, looking like an immovable granite statue, an empty carton of orange juice on the table next to his holstered firearm.

"Mama!" Maya scrambled out of the blanket, her dark curls bouncing as she threw her arms around my waist. "Mr. Marcus let us watch the monitors. We saw the green light come on! Did you catch the bad man?"

Leo followed at a slower, more deliberate pace, adjusting the wire-rimmed glasses that made him look uncannily like the miniature version of an MIT prodigy. He looked up at me, taking in the faint scrape on my cheek and the exhaustion lining my eyes. "The power draw on Sector Four dropped by eighty-six percent at three-seventeen in the morning. That was you and Mr. Vincent, wasn't it?"

I dropped to my knees, gathering both of them into my arms, inhaling the clean, sweet scent of their hair—the only true anchor I had in this hurricane of vengeance and corporate warfare. "It was. The power is safe, and so are you."

The heavy oak doors clicked open. Vincent Moretti walked in. He had discarded his soot-stained dress shirt for a crisp white one, though he hadn’t bothered with a tie. His dark hair was still damp from a shower, and a pristine white bandage was taped over his left temple where an electrical arc had grazed his skin.

He didn't look at Marcus, and he didn't look at the panoramic view of the empire he had just secured. His gaze locked directly onto me, dark, intense, and unreadable.

"The Department of Energy just released their preliminary findings," Vincent said, his voice a low gravel that resonated in the quiet room. "They’re calling the grid stabilization an act of unprecedented emergency intervention. The board of directors has called an extraordinary shareholder assembly for ten o'clock. Every television network from London to Tokyo is parked outside our lobby."

"And Julian?" I asked, rising to my feet while keeping a protective hand on Leo's shoulder.

Vincent’s jaw tightened. "His private jet filed a flight plan for Grand Cayman at dawn, but federal marshals grounded it before it could taxi onto the runway. He wasn't on board. He abandoned his penthouse, his accounts are being systematically frozen by the SEC, and a federal warrant for corporate terrorism and grand larceny has been unsealed."

"He won't run far," I said quietly, the chill returning to my tone. "Julian is a narcissist. He can't bear the thought of being forgotten, and he certainly won't leave while Sophia is still sitting in federal custody holding the ledger to his offshore shadow accounts."

Vincent stepped closer, offering me a sleek leather folder. Inside was a visitor’s clearance badge issued by the United States Marshals Service.

"She’s refused to speak to federal prosecutors," Vincent noted, his eyes narrowing. "She told the arresting agents that she would only open her mouth for one person. She asked for you, Elena."

I closed the folder with a sharp snap. "Then let's not keep my former best friend waiting."
