Chapter 30 - The Shadow on the Ridge

"Turn off the work lights!" Frank hissed, lunging forward to kill the high-powered lantern sitting on the edge of the limestone trench.

Total darkness swallowed the basement, save for the faint, dwindling luminescence of the sat-phone screen before it faded to black. I dropped to my knees, shoving the manila folder and the black cryptographic keycard inside my waterproof coat, zipping it securely across my chest.

"How many vehicles?" Cole whispered, his voice losing all its previous tremor, replaced instantly by the cold tactical discipline of a man cornered.

Frank peered through a ventilation grate nestled between the exposed foundational stones. "Two heavy utility trucks. Blacked out. No high beams, running only their amber fog lights. They aren't local deputies, and that sure as hell isn't Evelyn's leased Mercedes."

"They traced the ping," I said, my teeth chattering as the mountain chill seeped through the wet concrete. "The moment that case popped open, the sat-phone beamed a location handshake to whoever manages Project Monarch."

"Then we have about ninety seconds before they clear the driveway and sweep the ruins," Cole said. He grabbed my elbow, his grip firm and reassuring. "Frank, where’s the drainage sluice from the old 1989 build?"

"Runs south toward the ravine, drops into the creek bed behind the woodshed," Frank muttered, checking the slide on his pistol. "It's a tight crawl, Rebecca. Full of runoff and half-frozen mud. But it bypasses the main gravel lane."

"I don't care about the mud," I answered, adrenaline burning away the exhaustion in my muscles. "Move."

We slipped through the narrow gap in the shattered foundation like phantoms. The scent of lingering ash and wet soot clung to everything. Crawling through the corrugated iron pipe, the icy mountain water soaked through my jeans and gloves, numbing my skin instantly. Above us, the heavy clatter of tactical boots resonated against the floorboards of the scorched lodge.

Voices drift down through the floorboards—clipped, professional, without the frantic emotional hysteria Evelyn usually brought.

"Node confirmed active. Seal ruptured at twelve-forty hours. Search the basement perimeter. Find the carrier box and retrieve the Monarch keycard. If anyone is inside, detain under federal emergency protocol."

Cole pressed a finger to his lips, holding his breath directly behind me in the sluice. We crawled agonizingly slow until the pipe spilled out into the dense, snow-covered underbrush along the southern slope of Blackwood Ridge.

Behind us, a high-intensity flare lit the night sky above my ruined lodge with a terrifying, crimson glow. The hunt was no longer about local property deeds. The mountain had just become an active battlefield.
