Chapter 10 - The Defamation Campaign

By nightfall, Evelyn’s legal threat transformed into an all-out public execution.

I was sitting at the kitchen island surrounded by stacks of financial records, bank receipts, and land title copies when my laptop dinged with five notifications in ten seconds. Then twenty. Then fifty.

"Becca, don't look at social media," Sarah warned, walking into the kitchen from the guest wing, her face pale as she stared at her phone.

"What did she do?" I demanded, already opening my browser.

Olivia had uploaded a sixteen-minute video. She wasn't wearing her designer party dresses or holding a cocktail glass. She sat on an immaculate white couch in Denver, draped in an oversized cashmere cardigan, her eyes red-rimmed, devoid of makeup.

The title was trending across three lifestyle and travel platforms: *“My Sister Left Me to Freeze: The Untold Truth About Whispering Ridge.”*

In the video, Olivia sobbed convincingly. She painted a narrative of monstrous cruelty. She claimed that our late father had entrusted Whispering Ridge to the *family*, intending it to be a sanctuary for healing after his passing. She told her millions of followers that she had gone up to the lodge to prepare a surprise holiday reunion for me, only for me to storm the house with local armed men, destroy her personal belongings, and physically throw her and her traumatized friends into a zero-degree blizzard without shelter.

She never mentioned that she had stolen my master key. She never mentioned that she had charged ten thousand dollars to my commercial account, or that she had locked me out in my own storm.

Comments were flooding in at a rate of hundreds per minute:

*“Cancel Rebecca Hart! She’s a monster!”*

*“I hired her architectural firm for a remodel in Boulder—canceling the contract first thing tomorrow!”*

*“Disgusting psycho, throwing her own sister into the snow!”*

My business email pinged immediately. It was my biggest client in Aspen, a boutique hotel chain that was scheduled to sign a half-million-dollar renovation contract with me on Monday morning.

*“Rebecca, in light of the recent viral allegations and the pending litigation surrounding your estate assets, the board has voted to pause our partnership indefinitely. We cannot risk brand association with this level of controversy.”*

"They're suffocating me," I whispered, the room tilting slightly. "They're cutting off my oxygen before the court date even happens. Without the Aspen contract, I can't afford the property tax due on January 15th."

Cole slammed his palm on the kitchen counter, making the coffee mugs jump. "It's slander, pure and simple. We have the security footage, Becca. We have the sheriff’s bodycam from the eviction. We have the receipts from the lodge grocery store."

"A public smear moves at the speed of light, Cole," I said, rubbing my temples as a piercing headache blossomed behind my eyes. "The legal system moves like molasses. By the time I prove Olivia lied, my firm will be bankrupt, and the lodge will be on the auction block."

"Then we don't wait for Denver to play nice," Cole said, stepping close, his gaze burning with stubborn mountain resolve. "We fight them on our turf. My family has lived in Ouray County for four generations. We know every surveyor, every clerk, and every backroom deal Evelyn’s Denver cronies have ever tried to pull up here. You aren't losing this place, Rebecca. Not while I have breath in my body."

Before I could answer, the lodge lights flickered once, twice, and then plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
