Chapter 24 - The Collapse of Evelyn

"Miller..." Victoria gasped, her eyes darting between the wounded deputy and the unconscious mercenary at her feet. "You don't understand what’s at stake here. There is eighty million euros in that vault. I can wire five million to any offshore account you name within ten minutes of opening this door. Think about your family, Miller. What does this mountain town ever give you? Forty thousand a year and a broken back?"
Deputy Miller stepped down two more steps, his eyes hard and unyielding. The blood on his forehead had dried into a dark crust, but his aim didn't waver by a millimeter.
"This mountain gave me an honest life, Mrs. Vance," Miller said in a gravelly, calm voice. "Something you wouldn't know if it hit you in the chest. Drop the box, or I'll put a bullet through your shoulder."
Victoria’s knuckles turned white on the titanium handle. For a fraction of a second, I saw the madness in her eyes—the desperate calculation of a woman who had lived twelve years in hiding, running from international warrants, banking everything on this single, frozen night.
"No," she whispered.
She didn't drop the box. Instead, she spun around and slammed it with all her might against the digital keypad of the vault door.
A loud crunch of shattering electronics sparked from the blue LED console. An automated siren began to wail—a shrill, mechanical alarm that echoed violently off the subterranean rock. From deep within the old mine shaft behind the vault, a deep, ominous groan reverberated through the earth.
"If I can't have it," Victoria screamed, her voice cracking into madness, "nobody gets it! The fail-safe charges are wired to the security keypad! We have five minutes before the entire southern foundation collapses into the gorge!"
Evelyn screamed from the top of the stairs. "She’s crazy! We're all going to die! Let's get out of here!"
Evelyn turned and fled up the stairs, but Olivia was already crying at the cellar entrance. "Mom, the front porch collapsed under the snow! We're trapped! The drift is up to the roof!"
"Cole, help me!" I shouted, ignoring Victoria and rushing over to where Cole was struggling to push himself up against the wall. His ribs were clearly broken, his breath coming in shallow, agonizing gasps.
"I'm alright... Rebecca, the override..." Cole wheezed, grabbing my arm with shaking hands. "My father... he told me once... when I was a boy. He said if the mine ever caved... there's a manual mechanical winch in the drainage shaft."
"Forget the vault!" I told him, wrapping his arm around my shoulder to take his weight. "We need to get to the storm cellar exit under the carriage house! Deputy Miller, grab Victoria! Don't let her run into the shaft!"
Miller lunged forward, grabbing Victoria by her shearling collar just as she tried to scramble toward the jagged opening of the abandoned mine. She fought him like a wild animal, scratching at his face with manicured nails, shrieking incoherently about her money, her empire, and the twelve years she had wasted.
Miller twisted her arms behind her back with practiced efficiency, snapping his steel handcuffs around her wrists. "You're under arrest, Victoria Vance. Conspiracy to commit murder, armed robbery, and about ten federal charges I don't even have names for yet."
The stone ceiling groaned again, louder this time. A hairline fracture spider-webbed across the central granite lintel above our heads, showering fine gray dust onto our shoulders.

"Move!" Miller barked, pushing Victoria ahead of him toward the stairs. "Up! Now!"
