Chapter 9 - Shattering The Grand Table And Exposing Dark Secrets

Wesley’s footsteps echoed heavily against the marble floors of the foyer, moving with the rapid, purposeful stride of a man finally breaking his chains. He reached the heavy oak front door and grabbed the brass handle.

"Wait!"

The desperate scream echoed from the dining room. Wesley paused, his hand on the cold brass, as Ainsley came sprinting into the foyer, her designer heels slipping slightly on the polished stone. She was frantic, entirely stripped of the entitled facade she wore like armor.

"Wesley, you can't just leave!" Ainsley pleaded, grabbing his arm. "If you sell the house, what happens to the art collection? What happens to the offshore accounts?"

Wesley slowly turned around, his brow furrowing in genuine confusion. He looked down at his sister. "What offshore accounts, Ainsley? The forensic audit showed you were living entirely off my hospital salary and the second mortgage."

Ainsley froze, realizing she had spoken out of panic. Her eyes darted toward the dining room, where Grandmother had slowly appeared in the archway, her face a mask of absolute terror.

"Ainsley, shut your mouth this instant!" Grandmother commanded, her voice cracking like a whip.

Wesley’s eyes narrowed. His cinematic realism shifted into the sharp, analytical gaze of a doctor diagnosing a fatal symptom. He stepped away from the door, turning fully to face them. "What offshore accounts, Ainsley?" he repeated, his voice dropping dangerously low.

"Nothing," Ainsley stammered, backing away. "I misspoke. I’m just stressed."

Wesley reached into his coat pocket and pulled out his phone. "Marcus is on speed dial. I can have my lawyer freeze every single asset associated with this family name pending a federal investigation for fraud. Or, you can tell me the truth right now."

Grandmother leaned heavily against the archway, clutching her chest. "Wesley, don't. It's family business."

"I am the family business," Wesley roared, his restraint finally breaking, his voice shaking the crystal chandelier above them. "I paid for the food in your mouths! I paid for the roof over your heads! Tell me the truth!"

Ainsley burst into tears, crumbling under the immense pressure. "Grandfather didn't lose all the money before he died, Wes! He hid it. He moved almost four million dollars into an account in the Caymans to avoid the estate taxes!"

Wesley stared at her, the reality of her words hitting him like a physical blow. "Four million dollars? You had four million dollars this entire time?"

"We couldn't access it!" Ainsley cried, wiping her mascara-stained cheeks. "The account requires dual signatures! Grandmother’s and yours! But if we told you about it, you would have found out Grandmother committed tax fraud to hide it! So she kept it a secret, and we just lived off your salary until the statute of limitations expired!"

Wesley felt the air leave his lungs. It wasn't just entitlement. It was a calculated, criminal manipulation. They had watched him work eighty-hour weeks at the hospital. They had watched him struggle with grief, guilt, and the intense demands of raising a neurodivergent child alone, all while sitting on a secret fortune they were too cowardly to claim.

"You let me work myself to the bone," Wesley whispered, looking at his grandmother with pure, unfiltered disgust. "You let me think I owed you. You used my guilt over Claire's death to steal from my daughter."

Grandmother straightened her posture, attempting to summon her old aristocratic pride. "It was to protect the family legacy, Wesley! If the IRS found out—"

"The IRS is going to find out tomorrow," Wesley interrupted, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I am reporting the account. I am turning over the audit. They will seize the four million, and they will likely indict you both for tax evasion."

"Wesley, you'll go to jail too!" Ainsley screamed. "Your name is on the account!"

"I didn't know it existed," Wesley stated cleanly. "And my lawyer has the documented proof of my ignorance. I am bulletproof. You two, however, are going to lose everything."

Wesley turned back to the door, pulled it open, and stepped out into the freezing Charleston air. He didn't look back as Ainsley collapsed onto the marble floor, sobbing hysterically. The grand table was shattered, and their dark secrets had finally burned the house down.
