Chapter 27 - A Secret Cabin Hidden In The Woods

A few weeks after the prison visit, the peaceful routine of the Carter household was slightly interrupted by an unexpected discovery. Arthur had been meticulously finalizing the last remnants of the legal paperwork regarding the repatriation of the stolen Cayman funds. He had requested to review a box of Claire’s old, personal files that Wesley had kept stored in the attic, just to ensure every single financial trail tied to the Grandmother’s fraud was definitively closed.

It was a quiet Tuesday evening. The fairy lights cast a soft, golden glow over the kitchen where Wesley was helping Luna carefully measure flour and sugar for a batch of blueberry muffins. Arthur sat at the oak table, completely surrounded by faded bank statements and old tax returns. Suddenly, Arthur gasped, pulling a thick, slightly yellowed manila envelope from the very bottom of the box.

"Wesley," Arthur called out, his voice laced with genuine shock. "You need to see this."

Wesley wiped the flour from his hands and walked over to the table. Arthur pushed a single piece of heavy legal paper toward him. It was a property deed, officially stamped and notarized by the state of North Carolina.

"What is this?" Wesley asked, his brow furrowing as he read the fine print.

"It is a deed to a small, private plot of land about forty miles north of here, nestled deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains," Arthur explained, pointing to the signature line at the bottom. "And it is registered exclusively in Claire’s name. She bought it entirely with her own savings, just eight months before she died."

Wesley stared at the signature—Claire’s familiar, flowing handwriting. His heart skipped a beat. For years, he had believed his grandmother’s lies about their financial situation, and then he had discovered the massive Cayman account theft. But this was something entirely different. This was not a dark secret born of malice or greed. This was a secret Claire had kept entirely to herself.

"Why would Mom buy a secret house?" Luna asked, having walked over to the table, her hands covered in white flour. She looked at the paper with innocent curiosity, completely unfazed by the sudden emotional shift in the room.

Wesley knelt down to her eye level. "I don't know, bug. Your mother loved the mountains, and she loved nature. Maybe she wanted a special place just for us."

"There is a structural addendum attached to the deed," Arthur noted, flipping to the second page. "It lists a small, pre-existing wooden cabin on the property. It has been sitting there, completely untouched and unmaintained, for over six years. Your grandmother never knew about it because Claire used a private, separate bank account to pay the property taxes in advance."

Wesley felt a profound surge of emotion. Claire had been actively building a sanctuary for them, a hidden escape from the suffocating, toxic pressure of the Charleston estate, long before she had hired Arthur to investigate the stolen inheritance. She had known they needed a physical boundary, a place where Luna could be completely free.

"We own a cabin in the woods," Wesley whispered, the reality slowly settling in. He looked at Luna, whose eyes were wide with excitement.

"Can we go see it, Dad?" Luna asked, her hands clapping together, sending a small cloud of flour into the air. "Maybe there are new moths there! Moths love the deep woods because there are no loud city lights to confuse them."

"Yes," Wesley smiled, a deep, healing warmth spreading through his chest. The ghost in the prison was gone, but the beautiful, protective spirit of his late wife had just reached out to them from the past. "We are going to pack the car this weekend. We are going to find Mom’s secret cabin."
