Chapter 6 - The Midnight Raid

The realization hit me like a physical blow, driving the air from my lungs.

Julian hadn't just stolen the Sterling family fortune. He hadn't just drugged and gaslit me for eight years to keep me from asking questions. He was directly tied to the sudden, violent death of the only man who had ever truly protected me.

“He killed him,” I whispered into the cold stillness of the vault, my voice trembling with an agonizing mix of grief and searing rage. “He murdered my father.”

Before I could process the cassette tape in my hands, a sharp, metallic buzzing sound shattered the silence of the penthouse.

I snapped the binder shut, stepped out of the vault, and clicked the bookshelf back into its locked position.

The buzzing was coming from the center of Julian’s mahogany desk. It was an encrypted satellite phone—a heavy, matte-black device that had no cellular provider logo, blinking with a continuous amber light.

The screen displayed no phone number, only a single word: *VANGUARD.*

My heart thudded violently against my ribs. I picked up the phone. For three rings, I debated letting it roll to voicemail. But Julian’s empire ran on secrets, and whoever was calling this private line held the keys to the next battle.

I pressed the green button and brought the receiver to my ear. I remained completely silent, keeping my breathing shallow.

“Julian,” a low, raspy voice came through the line. It belonged to an older man, heavily accented with European inflections—refined, cold, and utterly devoid of emotion. “The Palmer House incident is all over Bloomberg and the London exchanges. You were instructed to keep the girl quiet until the restructuring was finalized. You failed.”

I kept my jaw tight, letting the silence draw him out.

“Listen to me carefully,” the voice continued, indifferent to the lack of response. “The federal indictment cannot touch the offshore liquidity pools in Zurich and Grand Cayman, but only if Cole retains the chairman’s seat tomorrow morning. We have already deployed bail counsel. You will be out on ten million dollars cash bond before noon. When you walk out of the Dirksen building, the girl must be dealt with permanently. No more sedatives. No more psychiatric hospitals. Do you understand?”

I gripped the phone until my knuckles turned white.

“Julian is currently wearing federal handcuffs in a holding cell,” I said, my voice smooth as razor wire, dropping every pretense. “And this isn't Clara. This is Aletta Sterling.”

There was a sudden, icy pause on the other end of the line. For five long seconds, the raspy-voiced caller did not breathe.

“Ah,” the man finally spoke, a soft, chilling chuckle vibrating through the speaker. “The little bird finally flew out of the cage. How remarkably inconvenient for you, Ms. Sterling.”

“Who are you?” I demanded.

“I am the man who funded your husband’s ascent, and the man who will authorize your liquidation if you sit in that boardroom tomorrow morning,” the voice replied, cold and aristocratic. “Enjoy the penthouse tonight, Aletta. It is the last comfortable bed you will ever sleep in.”

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Before I could set the phone down, the front double doors of the penthouse burst open with a resounding crash.

Shouts echoed from the foyer. The sound of scuffling feet, grunts of impact, and breaking porcelain tore through the apartment.

“Ms. Sterling! Lock the study!” Reyes’s voice roared from the hallway, followed immediately by the unmistakable crack of a taser deployment and a heavy body hitting the floor.
