Chapter 11 - The Cage Reopened

The elevator doors on the seventy-second floor opened with a heavy chime.
Julian Harrow stepped out into the foyer of the penthouse, his jaw set in a triumphant sneer. Behind him walked two private security heavies and an imposing man in scrubs holding a leather medical bag containing heavy sedatives and soft-padded wrist restraints.
“Search the apartment,” Julian commanded, adjusting the lapels of his navy coat. “If she resists, sedate her immediately. The court order authorizes necessary medical force. The ambulance is waiting in the basement bay.”
“Right away, Mr. Harrow,” the security lead muttered, drawing a stun gun as they moved into the grand living room.
The penthouse was completely dark. The storm raged outside, lightning flashing through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the overturned furniture and the shattered glass from Julian’s previous raid.
Julian walked into the center of the salon, looking around with disdain. “Aletta! Stop this childish melodrama! Come out, and maybe I’ll let you stay in a private sanitarium instead of a state ward!”
Suddenly, the massive double doors leading to the elevator vestibule slammed shut with a thunderous *bang*.
A heavy, automated deadbolt engaged with a high-pitched electronic whine.
The lights didn't turn on. Instead, the massive commercial television screen mounted above the fireplace flared to life with blinding white light.
Julian jumped, shielding his eyes from the glare.
On the screen was not a movie or a news broadcast. It was the live broadcast feed of WGN News Chicago, watched by over two million people across the Midwest.
And sitting at the anchor desk, beside the station’s lead investigative journalist, was me.
“Good afternoon, Chicago,” my voice echoed from the penthouse’s surround-sound speakers, filling every corner of the vast room. “I am Aletta Sterling. For the past twenty-four hours, my former husband, Julian Harrow, has claimed on national television that I am a mentally unstable woman experiencing a paranoid episode.”
Julian’s face went completely pale. His mouth fell open as he stared at the screen in pure disbelief. “What... what is this?”
“Julian claims he is at home, caring for his unwell wife,” I continued on the broadcast, looking straight into the camera lens with absolute authority. “In reality, Julian Harrow has broken into my private residence with private mercenaries, attempting an unlawful abduction to prevent the public from hearing this recording.”
On the screen, I held up the cassette tape recovered from the vault.
I pressed play on the studio recorder.
My father’s unmistakable voice filled the airwaves, clear and undeniable, followed by Julian’s younger, sharper voice from six years ago:
*“You’re cutting off the transfers, Anthony? Big mistake. You think you can fire me and hand this company to your little girl? If you go to the board tomorrow, you won't survive the drive.”*
*“Are you threatening me, Julian? In my own office?”*
*“It’s not a threat, Anthony. It’s an eviction.”*
Julian stumbled backward, his back hitting the marble mantel. The private security guards behind him lowered their weapons, looking at each other in sheer terror.
“Turn it off!” Julian screamed, clawing at his hair. “Turn it off! Someone cut the power!”
“This tape,” my live voice announced to millions of viewers, “along with the hydraulic forensic reports prepared by former Detective Logan Cross, has just been submitted to the Cook County State's Attorney. An arrest warrant for first-degree murder has been issued for Julian Harrow without the possibility of bail.”
The sound of multiple police sirens began to rise from the streets seventy-two floors below, screaming through the rain toward the tower.
Julian ran to the elevator vestibule, hammering his fists against the locked doors. “Open the door! Open the goddamn door!”
The elevator panel remained dead. The master override I had activated from the TV studio had locked the seventy-second floor completely.

He was trapped in the very cage he had built for me.
