Chapter 2 - The Silent Partner

“Are you alright, darling?”

A deep, calm voice cut through the whispers surrounding Bianca’s broadcast.

The crowd parted instantly. People who had been laughing a second earlier scrambled to clear a path, their expressions shifting from smug amusement to sudden, stark terror.

Julian Vance stepped out from the shadow of the mahogany bar.

He didn't raise his voice. He didn't storm across the deck or make a theatrical scene. He wore a crisp, unbuttoned white linen shirt and dark trousers, looking every bit the understated billionaire he was. But the moment Julian looked at Bianca, the temperature on the upper deck seemed to drop twenty degrees.

Julian Vance was the founder and majority shareholder of Vance Maritime Holdings, the parent company that owned the shipyard where the Lumière was built, the security contracts that protected the Monaco harbor, and—most importantly—the underlying debt instruments financing Bianca’s father's real estate empire in London.

Bianca’s phone slipped an inch down her hand. Her smile wobbled.

“J-Julian!” she stammered, blinking rapidly as she tried to readjust her livestream angle. “Oh, hey! We were just... we were just having a little fun! Your... your assistant here—she got in the way of my glass—”

Julian didn't look at Bianca’s phone. He didn't look at her sparkling dress. He walked straight toward me, reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a pristine white cotton handkerchief, and gently began wiping a stray droplet of champagne from my left cheek.

His touch was warm, steady, and completely tender.

“You’re shaking, Elena,” Julian murmured softly, his dark eyes flashing with a cold, predatory intelligence that only I was meant to see.

“I’m fine, Julian,” I replied evenly, my voice smooth and controlled, carrying the years of discipline I had cultivated long before I ever met a billionaire. “Just... surprised by our guest’s lack of coordination.”

Julian turned his head slowly toward Bianca.

“Ms. Voss,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a register so quiet that everyone within twenty feet had to strain to hear. “You dropped your champagne on my wife.”

Wife.

The word hung in the salt air, silencing the jazz band, silencing the crowd, and turning Bianca Voss into a statue of pure, unadulterated horror.

“W-Wife?” Bianca choked out, her face draining of all color until her foundation looked stark white. “She... she’s your wife?! But she’s... she’s wearing an off-the-rack dress! She was standing by the dessert table alone! I thought she was a caterer!”

Julian didn't blink. He reached out with two fingers, tapped the edge of Bianca’s raised smartphone, and neatly knocked it out of her hand.

It hit the teak deck with a sharp crack, the screen shattering into a spiderweb of dead pixels right as her livestream broadcast cut off mid-sentence.

“Pick that up,” Julian instructed quietly. “And then pack your bags. You and your father’s guests have five minutes to disembark before my harbor security has the Lumière towed back to dry dock.”
