Chapter 1 - The Sound of Silk Tearing

The Monaco night air was warm, heavy with the scent of saltwater, high-octane diesel, and expensive perfume. But the moment the chilled champagne hit my skin, the ambient heat of the Mediterranean felt like ice.
SPLASH.
The golden bubbles hissed as they ran down my cheeks, tangled in my eyelashes, and soaked directly into the bodice of my ivory silk dress. I had chosen that dress precisely because it was quiet. It had no loud designer logos, no plunging neckline, and no glittering sequins meant to catch the flash of paparazzi cameras. It was simple, elegant, and completely unremarkable—or so I had thought.
For half a second, the upper deck of the Lumière—a three-hundred-foot superyacht owned by shipping conglomerates and frequented by the untouchable elite—went completely dead.
Then Bianca Voss laughed.
It wasn't a soft, polite chuckle. It was a sharp, piercing sound that cut through the smooth jazz drifting from the grand piano near the bar. Her phone was still raised in her right hand, the front-facing camera lens pointed squarely at my face.
A tiny red icon pulsed in the corner of her screen.
She was live.
Across Europe, America, and parts of Asia, tens of thousands of followers on her luxury lifestyle channel were watching in real time.
“Oh my God,” Bianca gasped theatrically, tilting her head so both of us fit into the frame, her silver sequined dress catching the starlight. “Did everyone see that? I am so clumsy! But honestly, sweetie, you shouldn't wear white to a yacht party if you’re going to trip over your own feet.”
The small circle of socialites standing around her snickered.
Not all of them. A few older investors looked away, wincing at the blatant cruelty of the public humiliation. But enough people laughed—enough that the sound rippled across the teak deck, mixing with the clinking of crystal flutes and the gentle slap of water against the hull.
I stood there beneath the Monaco sky, champagne dripping from my chin, my fingers resting lightly against my damp silk skirt.

Bianca looked immaculate. Her blonde hair was swept up into a flawless chignon, her diamond drop earrings caught the deck lights, and her smile was radiant with malice. She thought she had just dealt the final blow to a nobody who had wandered onto her stage.
What she didn't know—what none of them knew—was who I actually was, why I was standing on that yacht, and what my husband owned.
