Chapter 50 - THE LAST INHERITANCE

The tension in the ballroom snapped like a dry twig.

Don Moretti stepped down from the dais, his ancient knees bowing slightly as he dropped to one knee before me. Around the room, one by one, the hardened mob bosses, the killers, the financiers, the rulers of the underworld bowed their heads in silent, absolute submission.

"The Bennett line lives," Don Moretti proclaimed, his voice echoing through the grand hall. "We recognize the child. We recognize Sarah as Regent until the child comes of age."

I stood there, looking over the sea of bowed heads, the sheer weight of what I now held threatening to crush the breath from my lungs. A maid from Queens, who had once scrubbed these very floors, now held the power of a modern kingdom.

Vincent stepped up beside me, his arm sliding securely around my waist. The pride in his eyes was blinding.

"You did it, Sarah," he whispered softly in my ear, his breath warm against my neck. "You saved Hope. You saved Daniel's legacy. It's over. We won."

We turned to leave the ballroom, walking back down the red-carpeted aisle toward the elevators, ready to return to the safehouse and take Hope home to an estate that was finally, genuinely safe.

As the elevator doors slid closed, isolating us from the cheering and murmurs of the ballroom, Marco leaned against the brass rail, checking his secure phone.

Suddenly, Marco’s expression froze. The color drained from his face faster than when the bomb had detonated in upstate New York.

"Vincent," Marco said, his voice trembling—a sound I had never heard from the hardened enforcer.

"What is it, Marco?" Vincent asked, frowning. "Francesca is locked in the vault. The council swore loyalty. What could possibly—"

"The safehouse," Marco choked out, holding up the screen.

The live camera feed of the panic room where Hope had been hidden was completely red.

The six elite Bennett guards were lying motionless on the floor.

The reinforced titanium door had not been blown from the outside—it had been cleanly opened from within using a biometric master key that only one man on earth possessed.

The crib was empty.

And spray-painted in fresh, dripping blood across the nursery wall was a single, chilling sentence:

*YOU THOUGHT THE POISON WAS REAL. THANK YOU FOR COLLECTING MY MONEY, SARAH. - DANIEL.*
