Chapter 30 - THE UNMARKED GRAVE

Forty-eight hours later, the storm had completely cleared over New York, replaced by a crisp, golden autumn sunrise.

The estate in Bedford was already being repaired by a private construction crew. The Commission had convened an emergency tribunal the previous evening; with Marcus Vance arrested and Julian Sterling confirmed dead, the Sterling syndicate’s assets were officially dissolved and absorbed under Vincent Moretti’s unchallenged rule.

In the sunlit sunroom of the manor’s east wing, Elena sat on the sofa, gently cradling Grace, who was happily coloring a drawing of our country farmhouse. Across the room, I held baby Hope, feeling the warmth of true safety wash over us for the first time in months.

“You don't have to leave, Clara,” Elena said softly, looking up at me with genuine warmth and profound gratitude in her eyes. “Daniel’s legacy is cleared. You and Hope are family now. There is a place for you here, always.”

I smiled down at my sleeping baby girl. “Thank you, Elena. But Hope and I need open skies. Daniel left us a small estate in Vermont… a quiet place where my daughter will never have to hear the sound of a gunshot.”

The heavy mahogany doors of the study opened, and Vincent walked out. He looked immaculate in a tailored dark grey suit, but the fatigue in his eyes went down to his bones. In his hand, he held Daniel Bennett’s open binder and a newly decrypted tablet.

“Vincent?” Elena asked, noticing the pale tension on his face. “What is it? Did the Commission push back on the harbor contracts?”

“No,” Vincent said slowly. His voice was hollow, stripped of all triumph. “The Commission conceded everything. But I finally managed to run the biometric algorithm on Daniel’s final hidden file.”

He placed the tablet on the coffee table between us.

On the screen was a live, high-resolution surveillance photo timestamped less than thirty minutes ago.

It showed the private VIP terminal at JFK International Airport. Walking through the gate, surrounded by four men in heavy European tactical gear, was an elderly man with silver hair, piercing grey eyes, and a silver-tipped cane bearing the antique crest of the Moretti bloodline.

Elena gasped, her hand flying to her throat. “Salvatore…”

At that exact second, every landline in the estate began to ring in eerie unison.

The heavy wrought-iron perimeter gates outside suddenly groaned, swinging open on their own as the estate’s primary security monitors flared crimson with a catastrophic system override.

Then, Vincent’s personal encrypted satellite phone vibrated in his palm.

Vincent clicked speaker.

A gravelly, aristocratic voice from the past echoed into the sunlit room, sending a wave of ice through every soul present:

*“Did you really think a boy could wear a king’s crown, Vincent? Open the front door. Your father has come home.”*
