Chapter 6 - THE CLINIC RECEIPT IN THE LOCKET

The small slip of paper trembled slightly between Marco’s thumb and forefinger. The ink was slightly faded, but the stamp from the Boston diagnostic facility was unmistakably clear. Marco’s eyes scanned the medical terminology until they landed on the comparative markers: paternal matching probability for Leo DeLuca.

The percentage wasn’t blank. It was ninety-nine point nine percent.

And the name listed as the legal guardian authorizing the genetic repository storage wasn’t Celeste.

It was Marco himself.

A cold wave of confusion washed over him, momentarily blinding him to the sounds of the ballroom and the distant murmur of the security guards outside. Three years ago—during that fateful week in the Boston hotel suite when his mind had been clouded by heavy fatigue and unremembered hours—he hadn't just been robbed of his financial records or separated from his sister. His own biological material had been harvested and stored without his knowledge or consent, engineered by Celeste into a long-term insurance policy against his future control of the syndicate.

“Marco?”

Elena’s voice broke through his daze. She had paused near the elevator doors while Dr. Harris wheeled their father ahead. She saw the pale, rigid expression on her brother's face and the small piece of paper clutched in his hand. She walked back slowly, her expression darkening as she recognized the logo on the slip.

“You found it,” Elena said quietly.

Marco looked up at his sister, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle ticked in his cheek. “She didn't just steal my money, Elena. She set me up from the very beginning. This... this was her ultimate leverage if I ever tried to cut her out of the empire.”

“She told me that night in Boston,” Elena confessed, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper so Dr. Harris wouldn't overhear near the elevator. “When she forced me out of the city—she gloated about it. She said even if you ever figured out the financial theft, you would never destroy her because she held the keys to your future heir.”

Marco stared at the slip of paper before slowly folding it and sliding it into his breast pocket. The anger burning in his chest wasn't the blind rage of a younger man; it was cold, focused, and absolute. Celeste thought she had built an unbreakable cage around the DeLuca legacy. She didn't realize she had simply forged the very bars that would keep her locked away for the rest of her natural life.

“Let’s get Dad upstairs,” Marco said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “We have guests to dismiss, and I have a phone call to make to the federal prosecutor.”

By midnight, the Chicago mansion was entirely empty of outsiders. The white roses had been cleared from the ballroom floor, tossed into the service bins like the discarded lies they represented. In the private second-floor study, a warm fire crackled in the stone hearth, casting a soft, amber glow across the dark wood bookshelves and the Persian rugs.

Frank sat comfortably in his leather armchair near the fire, a steaming mug of chamomile tea resting in his lap. Leo sat on the floor right beside his grandfather’s feet, carefully examining a collection of antique pocket knives that Frank had collected over the decades.

“This one... has a bone handle,” Leo whispered, holding up a small pearl-handled blade with intense concentration.

Frank smiled, his weathered face softening as he rested a gentle, slightly trembling hand on the boy’s head. “Your uncle... gave me that one... on my sixtieth birthday.”

Marco leaned against the mahogany mantelpiece, watching the two of them with a deep, settling peace he hadn't felt in years. The house was quiet again—not the suffocating, hostile quiet of Celeste’s regime, but a living, breathing silence filled with family.

Elena walked into the study carrying a tray of fresh pastries from the kitchen. She set it down on the table before looking at her brother. “The federal marshals took Celeste into custody about twenty minutes ago. Julian’s testimony is already on record. Her accounts are frozen.”

“Good,” Marco said simply, taking a slow sip of his whiskey. “She won’t see another dime of DeLuca money, and her name will be wiped from every corporate ledger in the country.”

“What about the estate?” Elena asked, glancing around the spacious room. “You need someone to help manage the household now that... well, now that everything’s changed.”

Marco looked toward the open study door down the dim hallway, where a familiar light was still burning in the small quarters near the back stairs.
