Chapter 4 - THE MASTER KEYCARD

The white card clattered onto the polished mahogany table as Marco tossed it down like a winning hand in a high-stakes poker game. It was a standard-issue electronic keycard, stamped with the DeLuca estate crest and encoded with administrator privileges that only Marco, the head housekeeper, and Celeste possessed.

Celeste stared at the white plastic rectangle as if it were a venomous snake coil ready to strike. The frantic panic in her eyes gave way to a cold, calculating hardness—the look of a cornered predator realizing that charm and deception had finally run their course.

“You’re throwing away a dynasty for a ghost and a senile cripple,” Celeste spat out, her voice losing its aristocratic veneer and dropping into a harsh, bitter hiss. She straightened her posture, lifting her chin despite the dozens of horrified stares directed at her from the surrounding guests. “Do you really think the syndicate board is going to accept a disgraced sister and an illegitimate brat over the empire we’ve spent the last two years consolidating? I brought the northern families to the table, Marco. Without my connections, your ports in Chicago are just expensive targets.”

Marco didn’t blink. “Business can be rebuilt. Family cannot.”

“Family?” Celeste laughed, a sharp, ugly sound that echoed off the high ceilings. “Your father spent thirty years treating you like a military asset instead of a son! And your sister ran away the second things got uncomfortable because she didn't have the stomach for what the DeLuca name actually requires!”

Elena stepped forward, her hand tightening protectively around little Leo’s shoulder. “I left because I found out what you were doing behind my brother’s back, Celeste. I found out about the offshore accounts you were draining into shell companies registered in Boston under your maiden name.”

Marco’s head snapped toward his sister. “What did you say?”

“She wasn't just managing your schedule three years ago,” Elena said, her voice steady and clear as she met her brother’s shocked gaze. “She was positioning herself to take over the syndicate’s liquid capital. When I stumbled onto the financial transfers during a routine audit of the family holdings, she threatened to frame me for embezzlement. She drugged you that night in Boston to keep you out of the way while she forced me out of the city under threat of violence.”

Marco slowly turned back to Celeste. The sheer magnitude of the betrayal wasn’t just personal anymore—it was structural, threatening the very foundation of everything his father had built over half a century.

“Is that true?” Marco asked. His voice was no longer quiet. It rumbled through the room with a cold, terrifying authority that made even the seasoned business associates in attendance flinch.

Celeste didn’t answer right away. She smoothed down the front of her designer dress with trembling hands, a thin, reckless smile touching the corners of her lips. “You think you’ve won, Marco? Look at your father. Look at the boy. You think the old guard is going to let an illegitimate child inherit the DeLuca syndicate? You’ll have a civil war on your hands before sunrise.”

Before Marco could reply, a sudden commotion at the front entrance interrupted the tension. The heavy double doors swung open once more, and two more of Marco’s senior enforcers strode into the ballroom, dragging a tall, nervous-looking man between them by his arms.

It was Julian Vance—Celeste’s personal financial advisor and the man responsible for auditing the estate’s secondary accounts.

Julian’s face was slick with cold sweat, his expensive silk tie askew. The moment he saw the room full of staring guests and Marco’s cold glare, his knees buckled.

“Boss!” Julian blurted out, thrashing slightly against the guards' grip. “Don't listen to her! She forced me to do it! She threatened my family if I didn't alter the ledger entries for the Boston holdings!”

Celeste’s face turned the color of ash. “Julian, shut your mouth—”

“No, I won’t!” Julian shrieked, tears springing to his eyes. “She’s been siphoning millions into offshore accounts for three years! She planned to liquidate the Chicago assets right after the engagement dinner and run to Europe!”

The ballroom erupted into chaos. Several of the prominent guests began gathering their coats, murmuring in shock and outrage as the reality of the criminal conspiracy unraveled before them.

Marco didn’t look at the fleeing guests. His entire world narrowed down to the woman standing by the buffet table and the tiny, frightened boy standing beside his sister.

He walked slowly toward Celeste, stopping just inches away from her. She looked up at him, her chest heaving, the terrifying facade finally shattered into a million irreparable pieces.

“Take her down to the lower vault,” Marco told his security head without breaking eye contact with Celeste. “Lock her in until the federal marshals arrive with the warrants for financial fraud and conspiracy.”

As the guards grabbed Celeste by the arms, she didn’t scream or fight back. Instead, she whispered one final, venomous sentence as she was dragged past him toward the service exit:

“You’ll never wash the blood off your hands, Marco. Not yours, and not the boy's.”
