The Glass Under the Table / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9

The shift in the household over the next few weeks was subtle, but undeniable. The oppressive shadow of Monica’s impending visits and constant, critical phone calls had vanished, leaving behind a vast, quiet space for healing.

Hannah noticed it first in Olivia’s posture. The slight, defensive hunch in her small shoulders began to straighten. She spent less time hiding in her room reading and more time sitting at the kitchen island while Hannah cooked, chattering animatedly about her middle school projects and the drama in her friend group.

One evening, while setting the table for dinner, Olivia paused, holding a stack of plates.

"Mom?"

"Yes, sweetie?" Hannah looked up from the stove, wiping her hands on a towel.

"Are we going to Aunt Monica's for Thanksgiving this year?" Olivia asked, her voice carrying a faint trace of anxiety.

Hannah walked over to the counter, leaning against the edge and giving her daughter a warm, reassuring smile. "No. We're going to host it here this year. Just the three of us. Maybe we'll order a pizza instead of cooking a turkey. What do you think?"

A massive, radiant smile broke across Olivia's face, transforming her features and illuminating the kitchen. "Can we get pepperoni?"

"We can get double pepperoni," Adam chimed in, walking into the kitchen and dropping his briefcase by the door. He walked over, wrapping an arm around Hannah’s waist and pulling her in for a kiss on the cheek, before ruffling Olivia’s blonde hair.

"Dad, stop," Olivia giggled, swatting his hand away, but she leaned into his side, finding comfort in his presence. Adam had spent the last three weeks proving to her, in a hundred small ways, that he was present. He listened fiercely, he defended her opinions, and he had completely stopped urging her to "brush it off."

Hannah watched them, a deep, profound sense of peace settling into her bones. The incident under the table had been a breaking point, but it was also a foundation. They had drawn a line in the sand, and in doing so, they had built a fortress around their child's heart.

But as they sat down to eat, the doorbell rang. It was an unusual, sharp sound for a Tuesday evening. Adam frowned, setting his napkin down.

"I'll get it," he said, walking out toward the front hall.

Hannah and Olivia exchanged a curious glance, the silence in the house amplifying the sound of the front door opening.
