Chapter 8

Adam stood on the porch of Monica’s house, the cold morning wind biting at his face. He hadn't told Hannah he was coming here. He had noticed Olivia’s pink backpack was missing when she was getting ready for school—left behind in the chaos of their sudden departure. He could have bought her a new one, but he knew this wasn't about the backpack. It was about reclaiming the space he had surrendered.
He rang the doorbell. A moment later, the door swung open.
Monica stood there, still wearing a silk bathrobe, holding a cup of coffee. Her eyes were red-rimmed, her face twisted in a mixture of anger and surprise.
"Adam," she said, her voice sharp. "I assume you're here to apologize for your wife's psychotic breakdown on the phone this morning."
Adam didn't smile. He didn't offer his usual polite, accommodating greeting. He stepped forward, his presence suddenly imposing, forcing Monica to take a half-step back into her own foyer.
"I'm here for Olivia's backpack," Adam said flatly.
Monica blinked, taken aback by his cold demeanor. "It's in the kitchen. But while you're here, you need to talk some sense into Hannah. She's threatening to cut me off."
"She already has. And I support her completely," Adam replied, walking past Monica without an invitation, heading straight for the bright kitchen with the white cabinets. He spotted the pink backpack sitting exactly where Olivia had dropped it near the dark wooden table.
"You're taking her side?" Monica followed him, her voice escalating into a shrill demand. "I was trying to help the kid! She's too soft, Adam! Someone has to toughen her up!"
Adam picked up the backpack, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the nylon strap. He turned around to face his sister-in-law, his dark eyes devoid of any of his usual passive diplomacy.
"You didn't want to toughen her up, Monica. You wanted to break her down because she has something you don't," Adam said, his voice low and vibrating with restrained anger.
"And what is that?" she scoffed, crossing her arms defensively.
"A family who actually loves her," Adam stated brutally.
Monica recoiled as if she had been physically struck. The cruel truth hit her squarely in the chest, shattering the last remaining fragments of her arrogant armor. She opened her mouth to argue, but no words came out.

"If you ever speak to my daughter with disrespect again," Adam added, walking back toward the front door, "I won't just walk out. I will burn your reputation in this family to the ground. Stay away from my wife, and stay away from my kid."
He walked out the front door, pulling it shut behind him with a definitive, ringing slam.
