Chapter 9 - THE VOW ON THE STONE TERRACE

Nora stopped.
She looked at Julian’s outstretched palm, then into those slate-gray eyes that had traded an underworld empire for a seat on the nursery floor.
She walked forward, placing her hand into his.
Julian’s fingers closed warm and firm around hers, pulling her gently toward them until all three of them were sitting together in the golden morning light.
“Toby told me something this morning before I left for the docks, Nora,” Julian said softly, his thumb gently brushing the back of her knuckles.
Nora smiled: “What did he say?”
“He said that Mommy sent an angel with warm milk to make the monsters go away.”
Tears welled in Nora’s hazel eyes, luminous and sweet:
“I’m not an angel, Julian. I’m just a girl from Brooklyn who knew what it felt like to be scared in the dark.”
“You are the heart of this house, Nora,” Julian whispered.
His voice was rough and thick with an unpayable debt:
“Six months ago, I was a walking dead man, building stone walls around my son because I didn't know how to protect him without an iron fist. You walked through the front doors of Il Miracolo and taught me that love doesn't shout. It kneels.”
Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, heavy velvet box.
He opened it between their hands in the warm morning breeze.
Inside rested an exquisite platinum ring set with a brilliant round diamond, flanked by two small, radiant sapphires—representing the two souls she had anchored in the storm.
“Nora,” Julian whispered, his baritone rough with an emotion that owned every corner of his life:
“Stay with us. Not as a governess. Not as an employee. Be my wife, my partner, and the queen of this family for all the years we have left.”
Toby looked at the ring, then up into Nora’s face, clapping his hands:
“Say yes, Nora! Stay forever!”
Tears of pure, radiant triumph spilled over Nora’s eyelashes, tracing down her cheeks like sweet spring rain.
She looked into those gray eyes that had become her fortress, her sanctuary, and her home:
“I will stay, Julian,” she whispered softly, her voice rich with an unshakeable, permanent peace.
May you like
“Forever.”
Julian slipped the ring onto her finger, lifting her hand to his lips in a deep, reverent kiss, and pulled both Nora and Toby against his chest in an unbreakable embrace beneath the open window.
