Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING AT PIER FORTY-TWO

At 12:15 AM, the fog off New York Harbor wrapped the abandoned shipping containers of Pier 42 in a ghostly, silver shroud.

Three black luxury sedans sat idling near the edge of the deep-water slip.

Marcus Cole—the ruthless logistics tycoon who had spent five years trying to seize control of the Brooklyn waterfront—stood beneath the gantry crane, smoking a thin cigar, surrounded by eight armed enforcers.

“Where is Dominic?” Marcus barked into his satellite radio. “The container ship clears the narrows in twenty minutes!”

The heavy fog horn of a passing tanker sounded across the water:

HOOOOON.

From the darkness between two stacked freight containers, a single pair of headlights flared to life.

A convoy of four armored SUVs rolled forward, forming an impenetrable semicircle around Marcus’s men.

The doors opened in unison.

Twenty federal agents from the Department of Justice swept into the clearing, their assault carbines leveled in synchronized perimeter coverage:

“FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! HANDS ON YOUR HEADS!”

Marcus Cole’s enforcers panicked, their hands darting toward their waistbands.

Before a single weapon could clear leather, Julian Thorne stepped into the glare of the high-beam headlights.

He did not duck. He did not run.

He walked straight toward Marcus with the terrifying, sovereign authority of a predator returning to his own territory.

“Marcus,” Julian’s baritone cut through the salt mist like an iron blade.

Marcus Cole gasped, dropping his cigar into a puddle of brackish water:

“Julian...?! This is a private commercial transaction—you have no jurisdiction here!”

“Dominic Vance gave his full confession to the grand jury forty minutes ago, Marcus,” Julian replied with cold, unyielding finality.

“We have the vehicle telemetry, the bank wires, and the eyewitness deposition of the boy you tried to orphan.”

Marcus lunged for an automatic pistol concealed beneath his wool overcoat.

Julian moved with blinding, effortless frontier speed.

He caught Marcus’s wrist in an iron vise grip, twisted the joint until bone cracked with a sickening snap, and drove his right fist into Marcus’s jaw.

THUD.

Marcus collapsed onto the wet timber boards of the pier, his nose shattered, spitting blood and teeth into the river spray.

Federal marshals swarmed forward, pinning Marcus to the wood and locking heavy titanium transport shackles around his wrists and ankles.

Special Agent Miller stepped up to Julian, extending a gloved hand:

“Fine work, Thorne. The entire Marcone network in Queens is being rolled up as we speak. Sophia’s name is cleared. The port is secure.”

Julian shook the agent’s hand, his gray eyes clear as winter ice:

May you like

“The port is yours, Agent Miller,” Julian said softly.

“I have a son waiting at home.”
