Chapter 5 - The Interrogation RoomThe interrogation room at the central precinct smelled of stale coffee, industrial cleaning fluid, and lingering cigarette smoke from decades past. The steel table in the center was bolted securely to the linoleum floor.

Vanessa sat on the opposite side of the table. Gone was the immaculate, perfectly polished socialite who had ruled our suburban social circle with an iron fist. Her hair was messy, her designer blouse rumpled from being hauled out of a luxury hotel suite in handcuffs at midnight, and her face twisted into a mask of venomous defiance.

She looked up as Detective Miller and I walked into the observation booth behind the two-way mirror. Even through the glass, I could see the cold, calculating fury in her eyes.

Inside the interrogation room, a junior detective sat down across from her, dropping a thick manila folder onto the metal table with a loud thud.

"Let's dispense with the theatrics, Mrs. Vance," the detective stated flatly, sliding a printed still-frame of the backyard incident across the table. "You're looking at felony child abuse, unlawful imprisonment, and multiple counts of systematic domestic torture. Your lawyer is downstairs, but he can't talk his way out of four hundred gigabytes of cloud-backed surveillance footage."

Vanessa let out a sharp, derisive laugh, leaning back in her chair with an air of arrogant superiority.

"Surveillance footage?" she sneered, her voice carrying clearly through the audio monitors in our booth. "You mean parenting footage? That ungrateful little brat was manipulative, disobedient, and destructive. I was running a disciplined household. Mark was too weak and distracted by his precious architectural firm to maintain order, so I took charge."

My hands curled into tight fists against the wooden rail of the observation booth. Discipline. She called psychological torture and public humiliation "maintaining order."

"Is that what you call locking an eight-year-old child in a dark closet for six hours?" the detective pressed, sliding a forensic photo of the scratched baseboards toward her. "Is that what you call tying her wrists with ribbon and pouring ice water over her head in front of fifty party guests?"

Vanessa’s smirk wavered for just a split second before hardening back into an icy glare.

"She deserved it," Vanessa hissed venomously. "She was trying to drive a wedge between us from day one. She cried every time I spoke to Mark. She wanted all his attention. I simply taught her her place in this family. And if Mark had any spine at all, he would have thanked me for straightening her out."

In the observation booth, I couldn't take it anymore. I pushed the door open, my boots echoing sharply against the concrete floor as I stepped directly into the interrogation room.

Vanessa’s head whipped around. For the first time since her arrest, the color drained completely from her face. The arrogant mask slipped away, revealing the panicked, trapped predator underneath.

"Mark..." she breathed out, her voice suddenly softening into a pathetic, wheedling tone. "Mark, baby, you know how stressful it’s been. The house, the social expectations... I didn't mean to go that far with the party game, it was just a joke that got out of hand—"

"Shut your mouth," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, but charged with a terrifying, icy intensity that made even the detectives step back.

I leaned down over the metal table, staring directly into her cold, dead eyes.

"The game is over, Vanessa," I said softly. "Your shell companies are frozen, your assets are seized, and every single person who laughed in that backyard is going to watch you stand trial for felony child abuse. You will never, ever see our home, our money, or our daughter again."

Vanessa’s eyes flared with sudden, unadulterated hatred. She lunged forward across the table, her handcuffed wrists rattling violently against the steel.

"You think you've won?!" she shrieked, spittle flying from her lips as guards instantly rushed into the room to shove her back into her chair. "You'll never get her back to normal! She's broken! She's ruined! Just like you!"

May you like

The guards dragged her screaming and kicking out of the room, her venomous curses echoing down the concrete hallway until the heavy steel door slammed shut.

I stood there in the silent room, breathing heavily, feeling the weight of her words settle over my chest. She was wrong. Lily wasn't broken. She was just waiting for her father to show her that she was finally, truly safe.
