Chapter 8 - The Fall of the House of Sterling

The sirens arrived before the broadcast had been off the air for three minutes.

Flashing red and blue lights painted the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the news station lobby, casting frantic, pulsing shadows across the walls. Four San Francisco police cruisers and two unmarked black sedans bearing the crest of the California Attorney General’s office had cordoned off the entire entrance.

Brandon tried to run through the backstage exit toward the loading dock, but he didn't make it past the green room corridor. Two uniformed officers intercepted him, shoving him against a row of metal storage lockers.

"Brandon Sterling?" an investigator in a slate-gray trench coat asked, stepping forward with an open leather badge case. "Special Agent Torres, California Department of Financial Institutions. We have an emergency warrant for your arrest on twelve counts of corporate embezzlement, securities fraud, and felony extortion."

"Call my father!" Brandon screamed, his face pressed hard against the cold green locker paint, his designer suit twisting as handcuffs were ratcheted tightly around his wrists. "Do you know who Richard Sterling is?! He sits on the municipal development commission! You can't touch me! This is a civil dispute! It's a setup by Naomi Vance!"

Agent Torres didn't even look at him. He glanced at one of the officers. "Search him. Bag his phone. Make sure the weapon recovered on the soundstage is logged under his associate, Waylon Cole."

Brianna was sitting on a bench in the hallway, hyperventilating into a paper bag provided by a network medic. Her chic, newly styled bob was a disheveled mess, her expensive silk blouse stained with mascara tears.

When two female officers approached her, she shrank back, shrieking. "I was just doing what Brandon told me! He told me to cut the hair! He said Naomi wouldn't fight back! He promised he’d pay off my salon’s lease! Please, I have nothing to do with the money! I didn't write the note! It was Waylon! Waylon did it!"

From the ground ten feet away, Waylon, his face bruised from the takedown, glared at his sister with pure, venomous hatred. "You stupid cow," he spat, blood flecking his teeth. "You sold out your own brother on live television."

"Take them out through the service bay," Torres ordered calmly. "The press is already blocking the main entrance."

I stood twenty feet away, Marcus beside me, watching the spectacle.

My phone was buzzing continuously in my pocket—dozens of notifications per second. Social media had exploded. The clip of the live broadcast had already garnered three hundred thousand views within seven minutes of airing. The hashtags were moving faster than the news tickers: *#SterlingFraud*, *#AtelierSalonBoycott*, *#JusticeForMiriam*.

"Your mother is safe," Marcus said, glancing down at a text message on his screen. "Elena has moved her to the private residence in Pacific Heights. Three guards on the perimeter, two inside. She watched the broadcast."

My throat tightened. "What did she say?"

Marcus’s weathered face softened, just for a moment, revealing the warmth that decades of corporate warfare had hidden beneath the surface. "She said you were your grandmother’s daughter. And that she was putting on a pot of tea."

Before we could reach the elevator, heavy footsteps echoed down the marble hall.

Richard Sterling, Brandon’s father, came marching through the double doors, flanked by two high-priced corporate defense attorneys carrying leather briefcases. Richard’s silver hair was impeccably combed, but his face was the color of raw beef, his tie slightly askew, his chest heaving as if he had run up three flights of stairs.

He saw Brandon being escorted toward the service exit in handcuffs and lunged forward, but Marcus’s security stepped smoothly into his path.

"Marcus Vance!" Richard roared, his voice booming through the corridor with the entitled authority of a man who had never been told 'no' in his sixty-two years. "You orchestrated this! You used a public broadcast to destroy a twenty-year development enterprise over a family quarrel?!"

Marcus took a single step forward. The difference between the two men was immediate: Richard was loud, sweating, and unraveling; Marcus was still, silent, and immovable as a mountain.

"A family quarrel, Richard?" Marcus asked, his voice low and deadly even. "Your son sent a death threat targeting my niece and her unborn child to extort seven million dollars in fraudulent debt relief. Your corporate entity, Sterling Asset Holdings, has been running an offshore Ponzi scheme using municipal bond credits for three fiscal quarters. Did you really think I wouldn't notice when your son tried to attach those debts to Naomi’s family trust?"

Richard’s eyes flickered toward me. For the first time, he looked at me not as the quiet, obedient girl who had spent weekends helping Brandon arrange charity galas, but as an adversary who had just demolished his life's work.

"Naomi," Richard said, dropping his voice, trying to inject a tone of paternal reason into his words. "Think about what you're doing. Brandon made a mistake. He’s young. He fell under bad influences with the Cole boy. But our families... our standing... if Brandon goes to prison, the Sterling name is finished. The baby you’re carrying carries Sterling blood. Do you want your child to grow up knowing their father is a convicted felon?"

The sheer, staggering audacity of the man knocked the breath from my lungs for half a second.

"Brandon didn't care about that blood when he drew a crosshair over it, Richard," I said, my voice steady, every syllable ringing with total finality. "He didn't care about family when he stood by and laughed while Brianna cut my mother's hair down to the scalp. You didn't raise a man. You raised a predator who thought women were disposable props in his balance sheet."

"Naomi—"

"Save your breath for the bail hearing, Mr. Sterling," Marcus interrupted, stepping between us. "Because at eight o'clock tomorrow morning, my legal team is filing a petition for immediate asset receivership over every project Sterling Holdings currently controls. Every subcontractor you haven't paid, every supplier you cheated, every bank you lied to... they will all receive copies of the audit Elena finalized tonight. You aren't just losing your son tonight, Richard. You're losing everything you own."

Richard stood frozen, his mouth slightly agape, as his two attorneys frantically checked their tablets. One of them leaned in and whispered frantically into Richard’s ear: "Mr. Sterling, the trading board just suspended the secondary bond offering. Trading on Sterling stock is halted. The bank covenants are triggering default clauses right now."

Richard swayed on his feet, his arrogant posture collapsing.

Without another word, Marcus took my arm, steering me toward the private elevator. The doors closed on the sight of Richard Sterling slumping against the corridor wall, the empire he had spent four decades building turning to dust before his very eyes.
