Chapter 7 - Unmasked in Primetime

The red tally light on Camera One flickered from dull amber to a blinding, razor-sharp red.

"We are live in five, four, three..." the floor manager signaled silently, throwing his arm forward.

Anchor Evelyn Vance, an Emmy-award-winning journalist who had spent twenty years carving a reputation for ferocious integrity before corporate mergers forced her into softer lifestyle segments, turned her sharp gaze to the lens.

"Good evening. I'm Evelyn Vance. Tonight, we were scheduled to bring you an exclusive conversation regarding a high-society wedding abruptly halted in San Jose—a story that has dominated Bay Area social media all afternoon. Sitting across from me are the groom, Brandon Sterling of Sterling Asset Holdings, and Miss Brianna Cole, owner of the Atelier salon."

Brandon leaned forward immediately, his posture a masterclass in performative heartbreak. He reached out, gently clasping Brianna’s trembling hand on top of the polished mahogany desk.

"Thank you for having us, Evelyn," Brandon began, his voice dipping into that soft, perfectly measured baritone he usually reserved for city council development hearings. "Brianna and I didn't want to come here tonight. We wanted to handle this private family tragedy behind closed doors. But when someone you love... someone you intended to spend your life with... experiences a sudden, catastrophic mental break, the public deserves to know the truth. Naomi Vance—no relation to you, Evelyn—succumbed to severe emotional instability this morning. She attacked Brianna without provocation, destroyed her own wedding gown, and fled with stolen family funds."

Brianna dabbed a corner of her eye with a tissue that had been strategically crumpled in her palm. "I only wanted to make her mother feel special," Brianna choked out, looking directly into the lens. "Miriam came to me crying, asking for help, and when I gave her a modern cut... Naomi lost her mind. She pulled out heavy industrial shears. She threatened my life."

"A harrowing account," Evelyn Vance said smoothly. Her face didn't register a flicker of sympathy. She didn't glance down at the prepared index cards on her desk. Instead, she touched her ear piece, listened for a split second, and continued: "However, Mr. Sterling... three minutes ago, this network received a verified data dump from an encrypted offshore server, alongside timestamped security footage from the Atelier salon taken at 9:15 AM this morning."

Brandon’s smile froze.

The studio monitors suspended above the stage suddenly flickered. The soft, flattering studio graphics disappeared, replaced by high-definition, multi-angle security footage with crystal-clear audio.

On the massive monitor behind Brandon’s head, Brianna’s salon appeared.

On the screen, my mother, Miriam, sat quietly in the stylist chair, her hands folded in her lap, wearing the modest floral dress she had ironed the night before. Brandon was standing in the background, laughing with Brianna.

The audio boomed through the studio speakers with terrifying clarity:

*“Make sure you cut it as close to the scalp as you can on the left side, Brianna,”* Brandon’s voice rang out on the broadcast, unmistakable, dripping with mockery. *“The old woman thinks her little peasant braid makes her special. If she looks like a mangy dog at the reception, Naomi won't have the guts to stand up during the toasts. She’ll sign the prenuptial appendix without reading the debt transfer clauses.”*

*“Are you sure she won't notice until the end?”* Brianna’s voice responded on the tape, a cruel giggle vibrating through the audio feed.

*“She’s half-blind without her reading glasses and too polite to complain,”* Brandon laughed. *“Just hack it off and shove that hat over her head. I told the photographer to take wide shots only.”*

In the studio, the air vanished.

Brandon’s face didn't just turn white; it seemed to cave in on itself. His mouth opened, but no sound came out. Brianna gasped, dropping her tissue, her gaze darting frantically from the overhead screen to the floor cameras, realizing that four million viewers across the West Coast were watching her recorded cruelty in real time.

"That... that's a deepfake," Brandon sputtered, his voice suddenly cracking into a high-pitched panic. "That is manipulated media! Arthur! Cut the feed! Cut the feed right now!"

"The feed is running on an uninterruptible broadcast loop secured by network shareholders, Mr. Sterling," Evelyn Vance said, her voice turning from polite professional to pure steel. "And that is only the beginning."

Evelyn tapped her digital tablet. The salon footage shrank into a corner box, and a series of scanned financial records filled the screen.

"According to forensic accounting documents verified ten minutes ago by the California Department of Business Oversight," Evelyn continued, her gaze fixed mercilessly on Brandon, "you didn't call off the wedding due to emotional instability. You arranged this humiliation to force Naomi into signing an amended prenuptial agreement. An agreement that would have transferred seven point two million dollars in fraudulent corporate debt—accumulated by Sterling Asset Holdings through offshore shell companies—directly onto her family’s debt-free commercial real estate portfolio."

"This is slander!" Brandon shouted, standing up from his chair. The lavalier mic clipped to his lapel tore loose, creating a deafening screech through the studio monitors. "Who authorized this?! Where is security?!"

"I authorized it," I said.

I walked onto the soundstage, stepping directly into the path of Camera Two.

The camera operator, reacting on raw journalistic instinct, swept the lens away from Brandon and framed me. The bright, blinding heat of the stage lights bore down on my shoulders, but I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I stood tall, dressed in my simple black coat, holding the heavy cardstock envelope in my hand.

"Naomi," Brandon breathed, backing away from the desk until his knees hit the studio wall.

"You called this press conference to tell the world that I was unstable," I said, my voice projecting across the silent room, picked up by the boom mics overhead. "You wanted to convince everyone that my mother’s dignity was worth less than a salon joke. But you didn't mention this, Brandon."

I held the sonogram up to the primary camera.

The director in the booth didn't hesitate. The telephoto lens zoomed in until the red crosshair, drawn directly over the ten-week-old fetus, filled the broadcast screens across the state.

"This was slid under my mother’s hotel door fifty minutes ago," I said, looking straight into the lens, addressing not just Brandon, but the millions of people watching. "Sent by Brandon Sterling and Waylon Cole. A demand to sign over my family’s property, accompanied by a direct threat to end the life of the child I am carrying. His child."

Brianna let out a high, ragged shriek, covering her face with both hands. "I didn't know about that! Brandon, you swore you were just going to scare her! You said Waylon was just going to deliver a legal notice!"

"Shut up, Brianna!" Brandon screamed, his mask completely shattered. "Shut your damn mouth!"

From the wings of the stage, Waylon Cole lunged forward, his eyes wild with rage. "You bitch! You set us up!"

He never made it past the second camera riser.

Marcus’s security team moved with terrifying, practiced efficiency. The operative who had intercepted Waylon in the hallway drove him face-first onto the polished studio floor with a sickening thud, pinning his arms behind his back with tactical zip-cuffs before the man could even register what had hit him. The sound of metal hitting linoleum echoed through the live feed as Waylon’s unregistered weapon slipped from his waistband and clattered across the floor.

Evelyn Vance didn't miss a beat. She looked into her camera, completely composed, her eyes burning with righteous fury.

"San Francisco police units and federal fraud investigators are currently assembling outside this building. Brandon Sterling, Brianna Cole... this broadcast is concluded."

The red tally light went dark.

The studio fell into an eerie, suffocating quiet, broken only by Brianna’s hysterical weeping and Brandon’s heavy, frantic gasping as he stood trapped against the wall, realizing that the world he had built on arrogance, theft, and cruelty had just been incinerated on live television.
