Chapter 3 - The Arrest in Pacific Heights

The Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco is built on steep hills, offering sweeping, unobstructed views of the bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the historic Alcatraz Island. It is an enclave of old money, tech billionaires, and high-society socialites who measure their worth by street addresses and historical architecture.

At 11:30 AM, a dark blue Ford Explorer belonging to the Napa County Sheriff's Department pulled up to the curb outside a pristine, three-story Victorian home on Broadway.

Beside it parked a marked San Francisco Police Department patrol unit.

Vanessa Vance—now legally Vanessa Sterling after marrying her wealth-management executive husband, Julian Sterling—was standing on her manicured front porch wearing an ivory cashmere lounge set, holding a mug of organic matcha tea.

Beside her stood our mother, Eleanor, wearing a pink tweed Chanel jacket, her face contorted in frantic, high-society outrage.

"This is an absolute outrage!" Eleanor shouted, waving her gold-ringed hand at Detective Miller as the investigator walked up the brick steps. "My son-in-law's family has lived in this city for four generations! His father is on the board of the San Francisco Symphony! You cannot show up at a private residence like this!"

Detective Miller didn't pause. She reached the top step, pulled a folded piece of paper from her coat pocket, and held it out.

"Vanessa Sterling?" Miller asked, her tone entirely dry.

Vanessa sneered, crossing her arms over her cashmere top. "This is absurd. My sister is having a hysterical allergic reaction to a minor prank and calling the police because she wants attention! She’s always been jealous of me! Ask my mother!"

"I am not asking your mother, Mrs. Sterling," Miller replied. "I am serving a felony arrest warrant issued by the Superior Court of California, County of Napa."

Vanessa blinked. The mug of matcha tea in her hand began to tremble slightly. "W-what?"

"You are under arrest for violation of California Penal Code Section 244: Assault with a Caustic Chemical," Miller stated clearly, her voice echoing down the quiet, tree-lined street where two neighbors were currently walking their purebred dogs. "A felony carrying a mandatory sentence of two, three, or four years in state prison."

Eleanor let out a sharp, ear-splitting shriek. "State prison?! Are you insane?! It was champagne! It was a wedding prank!"

"It was Lipo-Solv 900, Mrs. Vance," Miller said, stepping forward as two uniformed SFPD officers ascended the steps behind her. "An industrial degreaser containing sulfamic acid. Your daughter and her maid of honor, Chloe Bennett—who was taken into custody in Fresno twenty minutes ago—mixed it into a glass and threw it into her sister's face, causing severe second-degree chemical burns."

Vanessa’s face went completely grey. The ivory cashmere set suddenly seemed to drain every drop of color from her skin. "No... no, Chloe said it was just a strong cleaner! She said it would just stain her dress!"

"You have the right to remain silent," the female SFPD officer said, grabbing Vanessa’s right wrist and pulling it behind her back.

CLICK.

The cold steel handcuff snapped tight around Vanessa’s manicured wrist.

"Julian! JULIAN!" Vanessa screamed, turning her head toward the front door as the officer pulled her left arm back.

CLICK.

Julian Sterling—a polished, thirty-two-year-old executive wearing a tailored suit—stepped out onto the porch, holding his phone to his ear. His face was pale, his eyes wide with utter disbelief as he watched his bride of three days being cuffed on their front porch in broad daylight.

"Julian! Tell them!" Vanessa wept hysterically, her cashmere top riding up as the officers guided her down the steps. "Call your father's lawyers! Call the mayor! They're treating me like a criminal!"

Julian looked at Detective Miller, then down at his phone, where his father—the managing director of Sterling Global Wealth—was currently screaming through the speaker.

"Detective," Julian stammered, taking a step forward. "Can... can we settle this quietly? Can we post bail at the precinct?"

"This is an unbailable felony warrant pending initial arraignment in Napa County, Mr. Sterling," Miller replied, opening the rear door of the police cruiser. "Your wife will be transported to the Napa County Detention Center for processing."

Eleanor rushed down the steps, grabbing Miller’s sleeve. "You can't do this to my family! Claire is lying! She’s doing this to ruin Vanessa’s reputation! She’s always been a bitter, miserable, plain little girl who couldn't stand seeing her sister happy!"

Detective Miller stopped. She slowly turned her head, looking Eleanor up and down with absolute, terrifying contempt.

"Mrs. Vance," Miller said softly, "I have seen a lot of terrible parents in my thirty years on the force. But watching a mother defend a woman who dissolved her own sister's skin with industrial acid is a new low even for Pacific Heights."

May you like

Miller pulled her sleeve out of Eleanor’s grip, shut the cruiser door, and got into the front seat.

As the police car pulled away from the curb, its tires crunching against the wet pavement, Vanessa’s hysterical screams echoed through the tinted glass, fading slowly into the quiet, wealthy streets of San Francisco.
