Chapter 6 - The Voices in the Hall

I took the stairs slowly this time, keeping the call connected. Sarah was on one line; Jessica was still holding on the other. A text notification chimed from Beth Jenkins: *“We are in the car. We’re coming over.”* Another from Amanda: *“Tell Mia we love her. Hannah is grabbing her gift right now.”*

I reached Mia’s door and pushed it open gently.

Mia was still sitting in the same spot on the edge of the bed, her small shoulders curved inward like a wilted flower. She looked up, her red-rimmed eyes tracking my movement.

"Dad?" she asked softly. "Who are you talking to?"

Instead of answering, I tapped the screen, merged the calls, and hit the speakerphone button.

"Mia?"

The voice that echoed out of the small speaker wasn't an adult's.

It was Lily.

Mia froze. Her breath caught in her throat, her eyes widening in disbelief.

"Lily?" Mia’s voice was barely a squeak.

"Mia! Oh my gosh, Mia!" Lily was half-crying, her words tumbling out in a frantic, messy rush. "My mom told me what happened! Your stepmom lied to us! She told my mom you had strep throat, and then when I showed up, she wouldn't let me in! I thought you didn't want me there! I brought the watercolor set you wanted—the professional one with the silver tins!"

Mia looked at the phone in my hand as if it were a magical artifact that had dropped out of the sky.

"You... you brought the watercolors?" Mia whispered, tears welling up afresh, but this time they weren't tears of rejection.

"Yes! And Maya is on the line with her mom too!" Lily shouted through the speaker.

"Mia!" Maya’s voice burst through the audio, loud and cheerful and crackling with pre-teen energy. "Your stepmom texted my mom that you wanted a spa day without us! We were so mad at you, and now we feel so stupid! We're all in Maya’s mom’s car right now—Hannah and Chloe are here too! We're coming to your house!"

"Wait, what?" Mia stood up from the bed, her hands flying to her mouth. "You're coming here?"

"We have three boxes of pizza, two pints of mint chip ice cream, and Hannah brought her karaoke machine!" Maya yelled. "Tell your dad to open the garage door!"

Mia spun toward me, her eyes enormous, her mouth open in stunned, radiant shock. "Dad? Is that true? Are they really coming?"

I smiled—the first genuine smile that had crossed my face all day.

"They're coming, baby," I said. "Every single one of them."

Mia let out a sound that was half-laugh, half-sob, and threw her arms around my neck with such force that it knocked the breath out of me. She buried her face in my shoulder, her small frame shaking, but this time her tears were hot and clean, washing away the poison of the last four hours.

"They didn't forget me," she whispered into my collar. "They didn't forget."

"No, Mia," I whispered back, wrapping my arms tight around her. "They didn't forget. And nobody is ever going to make you feel like that again. I swear to you."

Downstairs, the front doorbell rang.
