Chapter 5 - The Apology Tour

At 3:45 p.m., Melissa’s white Lexus backed out of the driveway with two oversized suitcases in the trunk and Zoe sobbing in the backseat.

As soon as the red taillights vanished around the corner, an eerie, hollow quiet descended over the house. The purple and pink balloons still hung from the living room ceiling like mocking ghosts of an afternoon stolen from my child.

I didn't waste time being angry. Anger wouldn't fix Mia’s broken heart.

I sat down at the kitchen table, pulled out my own phone, and created a group text. I added Jessica Brooks, Sarah Miller, Beth Jenkins, Amanda White, and Rachel Vance.

I didn't sugarcoat anything. I didn't make excuses.

*“Dear Jessica, Sarah, Beth, Amanda, and Rachel,”* I wrote. *“This is Scott Reynolds. If you received a message from Melissa today or yesterday claiming Mia was sick, having an emergency, or canceling her birthday party, please know that none of those messages were true. Mia did not cancel. She has spent the entire afternoon sitting in her room in her birthday dress, believing that all six of her closest friends had abandoned her. Melissa orchestrated this without my knowledge or Mia’s consent. I am mortified, heartbroken, and deeply sorry for the confusion and pain this caused your daughters. Mia is safe, but she is shattered. If any of you are willing to let me explain over the phone, please call me.”*

I hit send.

For three agonizing minutes, nothing happened. I stared at the screen, my heart pounding against my ribs like a caged animal. I wondered if they would think I was crazy. I wondered if they would just wash their hands of our family drama and tell their daughters to stay away from the Reynolds house entirely.

Then, my phone rang.

The caller ID flashed: *Jessica Brooks.*

I answered on the first ring. "Jessica—"

"Scott, what in God's name happened over there?" Jessica’s voice was fierce, protective, but thick with genuine distress. "Lily has been locked in her bathroom for an hour! She threw the birthday present across the room because she thought Mia hated her! She told me Melissa looked her right in the eye and said they had 'no room' for her!"

"I know," I said, my voice cracking despite my efforts to hold it together. "Jessica, I swear to God on Claire's grave, I was in Aurora picking up chairs when it happened. I had no idea. Melissa intercepted the whole thing so she could throw a party for Zoe’s friends."

A sharp intake of breath hissed over the line. "Are you serious? She used Mia’s birthday to host Zoe’s friends?"

"I have the text logs," I said, rubbing the bridge of my nose as tears finally pricked my eyes. "She told Sarah that Mia wanted a spa day. She told Beth that Mia was overwhelmed with homework. She told Amanda that the party was moved to next week. She systematically lied to all five of you."

"That sick, twisted woman," Jessica breathed.

Before Jessica could say another word, three beeps came through my receiver—call waiting.

"Jessica, hold on, someone else is calling."

I clicked over. It was Sarah Miller, Maya's mom.

"Scott?" Sarah’s voice was breathless. "I just read your text. Maya is sitting right next to me crying her eyes out. She spent three days making a custom scrapbook for Mia! Is Mia okay?"

"She's upstairs, Sarah," I said. "She thinks nobody loves her."

"Put her on speaker," Sarah commanded. "Right now."

"Wait, Sarah—"

"Put her on speaker, Scott, or so help me, I am putting all five of these girls in my minivan and we are driving over there right now with baseball bats."

A fragile, tremulous warmth suddenly broke through the ice in my chest.

May you like

"Hold on," I whispered. "Let me go upstairs."
