Chapter 3 - The Unraveling of Dr. Sterling

By noon, the news had swept through Mercy General Hospital like wildfire. Dr. Mark Sterling, the golden boy of the cardiothoracic department, the man slated to become chief surgeon next quarter, had been locked out of his own home by county deputies while dressed in a silk bathrobe.

Mark sat in a sterile, windowless conference room on the fourth floor of the hospital, his hair disheveled, his pristine white coat draped over the back of a metal chair. Across from him sat the chief of staff and two members of the hospital’s executive board.

"Mark, we’ve received formal filings from Harrington Health Capital’s legal division," the chief of staff said, his tone grim. "Not only are you facing an emergency property injunction, but there is an active financial audit being conducted into hospital supply chain grants that you oversaw."

"That’s absurd!" Mark slammed his palm onto the conference table, his voice cracking with desperation. "This is a domestic dispute! My wife is having a hysterical episode because of a family disagreement over Christmas dinner! You can't let a personal divorce proceeding interfere with my surgical schedule!"

"It’s not just a domestic dispute when your father-in-law is Hugo Harrington," one of the board members remarked coldly. "And it’s certainly not personal when financial records show thousands of dollars in department research funds funneled toward unauthorized external vendors—specifically, medical supply firms where your ex-wife Beverly and your daughter Jenna hold silent partnership shares."

Mark froze. The blood rushed in his ears. He had thought he was clever, skimming small percentages from institutional grants over the years to support Jenna’s lifestyle and keep Beverly comfortable. He had assumed nobody was paying attention because his surgical metrics were stellar.

He had forgotten who Elaine’s family was. He had forgotten that before Elaine married him, she had spent five years managing corporate compliance and medical equity portfolios for Harrington Health Capital before stepping away to play the supportive housewife.

"I want to speak to my wife," Mark whispered, his bravado entirely evaporated. "I need to call Elaine."

"Dr. Sterling," the chief of staff said, standing up and sliding a termination and suspension notice across the table. "Effective immediately, your surgical privileges are revoked pending a federal audit. Security will escort you to your locker."

As Mark walked out of the hospital through the main lobby, shielding his face from the afternoon sunlight and reporters who had somehow caught wind of the scandal, his phone rang. It was Jenna.

"Dad? Where are you?" her voice shrilled through the speaker. "The credit cards are declined! I tried to buy a latte at the corner cafe and the barista cut the card in half! What is going on?!"

Mark stared at the gray asphalt beneath his feet, the reality of his total, unmitigated ruin finally crashing down upon him. "We don't have any money, Jenna," he choked out. "We don't have anything."
