Chapter 2 - The Morning After the Fall

The morning sun filtered through the frosted bedroom windows, casting long, sharp shadows across the floorboards. Elaine had not slept. She had spent the night reviewing property titles, corporate filings, and bank accounts—reminding herself of who she was before she allowed a smooth-talking thoracic surgeon to convince her that her wealth, her career, and her independence were secondary to his ambitions.

Downstairs, the house was eerily quiet. The aftermath of Christmas dinner remained exactly as it had been left: half-eaten plates of ham, congealing sweet potatoes, and the dark stain of gravy near the table.

Mark had slept on the guest room sofa—not out of remorse, but out of petty anger. He believed Elaine needed to be "taught a lesson" about hospitality and respecting Jenna’s feelings.

At 8:00 a.m., heavy pounding echoed at the front door.

Mark, wearing a silk bathrobe and holding a mug of black coffee, grumbled as he walked down the stairs. He assumed it was a neighbor returning a borrowed ladder or the morning paper delivery. He pulled open the heavy oak door with an impatient scowl, ready to dismiss whoever was disturbing his morning peace.

Instead of a neighbor, two uniformed county sheriff deputies stood on the porch, flanked by a tall, impeccably dressed attorney holding a thick leather briefcase.

"Dr. Mark Sterling?" the lead deputy asked, his voice neutral and authoritative.

Mark blinked, his coffee mug pausing halfway to his mouth. "Yes? Is there a problem? We had a minor family disturbance last night, but—"

"This isn't about last night's call, Doctor," the attorney interrupted, stepping forward and flashing a laminated badge and legal seal. "My name is Vance, legal counsel for Harrington Health Capital and the sole trust holder of this estate. You and all unauthorized occupants are hereby served with an immediate notice of eviction and a restraining order barring you from this property."

Mark let out a sharp, incredulous laugh. "Eviction? Are you out of your mind? I bought this house ten years ago! My name is on the deed!"

Attorney Vance tilted his head, a thin, humorless smile touching his lips. "Check page four of your prenuptial agreement, Dr. Sterling—the one your ego prevented you from actually reading when you married Elaine Harrington. Furthermore, check the county property tax ledger from six months ago. You didn't buy this estate, Doctor. You were merely allowed to live in it."

Before Mark could process the words, Jenna appeared at the top of the stairs in her pajamas, yawning loudly. "Dad, who's at the door? Tell them to keep it down, my head is pounding from that cheap wine—"

"Shut up, Jenna," Mark hissed, his face draining of all color. He looked back at the deputy, panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade. "There's been a mistake. My wife—Elaine—she's upstairs. Let me get her. She’ll clear this up. Elaine!" he shouted toward the stairwell. "Elaine, get down here and tell these idiots who owns this house!"

The heavy footsteps descending the stairs weren't heavy or hurried. They were measured, deliberate, and accompanied by the crisp click of heels.

Elaine appeared at the landing, dressed in a sharp charcoal blazer over a silk blouse, her posture upright and unyielding. The pain in her knee was still a dull, persistent throb, but her eyes were ice.

"She’s right here, Mark," Elaine said, her voice echoing in the grand foyer. "And she agrees with every word the attorney just said."
