Chapter 5 - The Nursery Completed

Two weeks after the disaster on the back deck, Ty and I finally walked into the small nursery in our brick house.

The room had remained half-painted in pale yellow since January—a painful monument to a future that had been abruptly stolen from us. Every time I walked past the open door, I used to feel a cold hollow space in my chest.

Not anymore.

Ty had spent the last four evenings working late into the night. When he swung the nursery door open for me on a warm Friday evening, the transformation took my breath away.

The walls were finished in a warm, soothing butter-yellow. In the corner sat a white rocking chair with a knitted quilt Grandma had made years ago. And centered on the wall above the white wooden crib was a small, elegant floating wooden shelf.

Resting on that shelf was the manila envelope Grandma had brought us, alongside the hospital footprint card, the tiny cream-colored cap, and a small glass jar filled with dried white hydrangeas from our front garden.

“Ty...” I breathed, my hand flying to my mouth as tears welled in my eyes. “You did this?”

“We did this,” Ty corrected softly, stepping up behind me and wrapping his arms securely around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder. “Macy’s room. She deserves to be remembered here. Not hidden away, and not exploited by people who don't know what love looks like.”

I turned around in his arms, burying my face against his broad chest, letting the tears fall freely. They weren't tears of sorrow now, but of deep, abiding healing.

We had survived the worst thing a parent could possibly endure. And we had survived the toxic, parasitic cruelty of the people who were supposed to protect us. We were smaller now—just Ty and me, anchored by Grandma Jeannie’s fierce loyalty—but we were unbreakable.
