Chapter 4 - The Unraveling on Social Media

While we were reclaiming our peace in Evansville, Mom and Carly were discovering that the narrative they had meticulously crafted on Facebook and Instagram was rapidly blowing up in their faces.

Carly had expected her gender reveal guests to sympathize with her. She had posted a long, dramatic victim-status rant on Sunday night, claiming that her "grieving sister had thrown a screaming tantrum and ruined her party because she couldn't handle seeing another woman pregnant."

What Carly hadn't anticipated was that forty people had witnessed the entire event firsthand.

By Monday afternoon, the comment section of her post had turned into a public firing squad.

Aunt Linda: “Carly Albright, are you completely out of your mind? You read a private grief letter out loud that your mother stole from a locked box on Nora’s due date! It was disgusting!”

Carly’s Friend (from church): “Wait... that letter wasn't given to you willingly? Your mom stole it? I’m deleting my comment of congratulations, that is horrific.”

Uncle Ray: “Beatrice and Carly, you both ought to be ashamed of yourselves. I’ve left the family group chat. Don't call me.”

Realizing the public relations disaster she had unleashed, Carly panicked. She deleted the post within four hours, but screenshots of her tirade—and the condemning witness comments—had already been saved and forwarded to half the county.

Even worse for them, Ty’s brother, who worked as a local building contractor, happened to be renovating the kitchen of a prominent local attorney named Marcus Vance. When Marcus heard about the illegal entry into a locked chest and the public reading of private correspondence without consent, he casually mentioned that under Indiana law, civil torts for invasion of privacy, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and theft of personal property carried severe statutory penalties.

On Wednesday morning, Mom tried to call Ty’s phone. When it went straight to voicemail, she tried Grandma’s landline.

Grandma answered, listened to three seconds of Mom’s frantic wailing about how "everyone in town is being so mean to Carly," and calmly said:

“Beatrice, if you or your golden-child lawyer-wannabe daughter contact anyone in this family again, I’m personally handing the security footage from my hallway and my attorney’s cease-and-desist letter to the local magistrate. Lose our number.”
