Chapter 27 - The Ledger in the Tool Chest

"Daddy!"

Maisie’s cry pierced the darkness of the mill, shattering whatever restraint I had left. Her small face was red from crying, her pigtails tangled with sawdust, but she was alive.

"Maisie! Don't move, baby, I'm right here!" I yelled, taking two steps toward the iron spiral staircase that led to the catwalk.

The sharp, metallic cocking of a hammer stopped me cold.

From behind an enormous circular saw housing, the Canadian mercenary stepped out. He was massive, his beard caked with rime, holding a heavy .45 semi-automatic leveled directly at my forehead.

"Take another step, friend, and your girl gets to watch your head open up," the man said in that flat, freezing northern drawl I had heard over the phone.

I stood frozen in the middle of the floor, the heavy wrench hanging uselessly at my side.

"Let her go, Vanessa," I said, keeping my eyes fixed on my sister-in-law. "Julian has already been arrested. The grand jury has the offshore accounts. The sheriff is down the hill right now. It's over. Blackwood Crest is dead."

"Julian is an idiot who got sloppy!" Vanessa spat, her voice climbing in pitch until it was almost a scream. "He thought he could play games with judges and deeds. I don't care about the company anymore, David! We were supposed to be across the border two hours ago! Julian had three million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds stashed in the company safe in Quebec. I have the keys. I have the passwords. But I wasn't going to leave without settling the score with you."

"By hurting a child?" I asked, my voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "You really are that rotten, aren't you?"

"She ruined my life the day she was born!" Vanessa hissed, glaring at Maisie with pure hatred. "Before her, Richard gave me everything. Every dime he made from the sawmill went into our accounts. But when your wife died, Richard started putting money aside for *her* college fund! For *her* future! He gave you the timber rights that should have belonged to my family! And then you had the audacity to let her bake that disgusting cake and present it like she was the center of the universe!"

"You're insane," I said, realizing with terrifying clarity that Vanessa wasn't just greedy—she was a malignant narcissist whose fragile ego had completely shattered under the weight of her own exposure.

"Maybe I am," Vanessa laughed, a wild, hollow sound. "Vaughn, shoot him in the knees. I want him on the floor when I burn this place down."

The big mercenary shifted his weight, his finger tightening on the trigger of the .45.

"Daddy, look out!" Maisie screamed.

At that exact second, Maisie didn't just cry—she acted. With the bravery of a child who had grown up watching her father work in metal shops, she kicked out with both boots, striking the heavy steel work lantern sitting on the edge of the catwalk.

The heavy lantern tumbled over the edge, plummeting twenty feet through the air.

It smashed directly into the back of Vaughn’s head with a sickening crunch.
