Chapter 9 - Desperation Breeds Poison

Julian Sterling’s aristocratic mask completely cracked. He snatched the binder from Mr. Vance's outstretched hands, his eyes scanning the federal seals, the docket numbers, and the undeniable signature of the Secretary of the Interior.

"This... this is an ambush," Sterling hissed, his knuckles turning white against the paper.

"It is not an ambush, Mr. Sterling," I said, walking down the steps to the inner gate, standing mere inches from him across the iron bars. "It is Arthur Vance protecting his home from scavengers. You tried to prey on an old man, and you funded a deadbeat gambler who sold you air. Your fight isn't with me. Your fight is with the man standing behind you."

Sterling slowly turned his head toward Richard.

The look in the billionaire’s eyes was pure, lethal fury.

Richard instinctively took two steps backward, tripping over his own heels and tumbling hard onto the gravel. "Julian... Julian, listen to me! I didn't know Arthur did this! I swear to God I didn't know! We can fight the trust! We can hire judges—"

"You took five hundred thousand dollars of my money under false pretenses, Richard," Sterling said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy whisper. "You signed a personal guarantee backed by assets you did not possess. That is felony wire fraud and grand larceny."

"Please!" Lydia cried, dropping to her knees beside Richard, grabbing Sterling’s polished shoes. "We don't have five hundred thousand dollars! We have nothing! Our house in Boston is in foreclosure! They’re repossessing our cars! Please, Mr. Sterling, spare us!"

Sterling pulled his foot away from Lydia’s grasp in utter disgust, as if shaking off a cockroach.

"My legal team will file the criminal complaint with the state attorney general before lunch," Sterling told Richard with terrifying calm. "And then my collections agency will begin liquidating every asset you, your wife, and your delinquent daughter possess. If I do not have my funds returned within forty-eight hours, Richard, you will spend the rest of your pathetic life in a state penitentiary."

Sterling turned on his heel, climbed into his Maybach without another word, and slammed the heavy door. The luxury car backed out of the driveway and sped away, kicking up a cloud of dust that settled over Richard and Lydia’s kneeling figures.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Richard sat in the dirt, breathing heavily, his eyes wild and bloodshot. The realization of complete, catastrophic ruin had finally shattered his arrogant delusions. He had no money, no land, his daughter was in a holding cell, and a billionaire’s legal army was marching toward his throat.

Slowly, Richard pushed himself up from the gravel. He walked over to the iron gate, gripping the bars until his hands shook violently.

"You did this," he whispered, his voice trembling with psychotic rage. "You did this to us, Clara. You destroyed this family."

"You destroyed this family seventeen years ago when you left a five-year-old girl on a porch in the middle of a thunderstorm and drove away," I replied, feeling no pity, only an overwhelming sense of closure.

"You think you won?" Richard sneered, a terrifying, desperate grin spreading across his face. "You think Arthur loved you? You stupid little girl. You don't know the real reason we left you here, do you?"

I narrowed my eyes. "What are you talking about?"

"Ask Vance," Richard laughed, a ragged, broken sound that sent a cold chill down my spine. "Ask Vance why Arthur paid us fifty thousand dollars to walk out of your life! Ask him whose daughter you really are!"
